In the days, weeks and months ahead, there would be comfort in that thought. Luka was born in June. His mother had been briefly a nuclear refugee, fleeing Tokyo for Osaka when he was still inside her belly. He appears mercifully unharmed by that ordeal.

noticed a large oscillation throughout the entire house, enough to dislodge a monitor from its stand on the desk.

Stay away from the coast, kids.

Here in Hachinohe, it was damn strong! Lasted a long time, and I was afraid it was just going to keep getting stronger. Luckily it started to subside.Broken glasses, picture frame fell and broke. Many things fell over or moved. We have a tsunami warning, but I think I am far enough away to remain in the house. Just hope that is it, no aftershocks or anything like that. Hope Hammer is ok, he was right at the epicenter.

WOW it really was a big one. I was on my bike and didn't really notice much except a few swaying traffic lights and heard some alarms. But when I got to daycare a few moments later, they were all huddled in a circle with their padded hoods on. It was hilarious.

See my blog for a photo... http://www.keitaigoddess.com

Hope our friends up north are doing OK. I hope Ishinomaki doesn't get hit again.

What level of stupid is needed to un-invent the hardhat ?

Can it even be quantified ?

What would be the base unit ?

Tiny southern EQ

Postby BigInJapan » Sat Dec 22, 2012 3:42 pm

We had a little jolt about 15 mins ago here, down south (I'm in N/E Fukuoka).
This is only the second quake I've felt since moving down here about a year and a half ago.
The windows shook for a split second as it went by, gone in less than a second.
The epicenter was M3.3 around Iyo-nada in the Seto inland sea, off the west coast of Shikoku (registered as magnitude 1 in Hiroshima, Ehime, and Yamaguchi).

I remember pulling this kind of stunt in an highschool geography test. I was deep in my surrealist phase...
I think my ears were ringing for a full week from the ass whooping the teacher gave me... Was really close to be the first frenchman on the moon... and without need for anykind of spaceship...

(for my defense, the xeroxed photo from the test where of an atrocious quality, we wuz supposed to describe geological formation from a satellite view, and it was a zone around Verdun of all place... I grew up there and all i could see from the picture was a charred t-bone steak, and it was the post gulf war times, satpicts where giving me instant boners and where starting to get much more easily available)

Guys... check the quake list for yesterday (25/2):

http://typhoon.yahoo.co.jp/weather/jp/earthquake/list/

There's really a shitton of small shakes. around 2 or 3 per hour. I'm not sure it's really a good sign...

It's a less bad sign than the series of M5 ~ M6 quakes in the Sanriku-oki zone which started on March 9th, 2011 and came to a sudden halt at 7:49 on the morning of March 11th.

If I could predict that, I'd be tapping the Japanse government for a sizeable reasearch grant... in the meantime I just keep an occasional lookout for patterns resembling the pre-3/11 one...

All I have is the data in the list I linked to. Now, I am not going to claim a similar pattern (a M7~ish quake in a subduction zone followed by a series of M5/6 quakes) will necessarily lead to a similar outcome, but I'd like to be aware of it so I can stock up on toilet paper ;).
