I fall in the second catagory but it's hard to live life normally when getting off any train makes you want to sing this:

I wonder where this Mrs. Fujiyama fit in... I can only guess.

Besides after reading Canton's description of the UK today, http://www.fuckedgaijin.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24508

You FGs have probably all read how a major displacement of the big ol' plates creates all sorts of pressure down the line, and how the massive shift that caused the 2004 tsunami was followed four months later by a powerful earthquake nearby, one that fortunately didn't do much damage because it struck around a relatively uninhabited Indonesian island.

In any case, if I lived or worked on liquefaction-prone reclaimed land, I'd be implementing a get-me-outta-here plan, because any major quake would be unfold pretty much according to the Kobe script. I'd also be assessing - I am! - just how likely the neighbors' shit-shacks are likely to start fire.

Well unless you are talking about meteor impacts or megavolcanos I would say the big one was the big one. The big 9.0 magnitude quakes all have occurred along plate boundary subduction zones. Transform faults like the San Andreas or the Trans Shikoku are inherently more limited in size because there is less of them to slip. All the subduction zones faults are out at sea in Japan so it is hard to see something getting huge amounts bigger.

How BIG does THE BIG ONE have to be?

The Great Kanto Earthquake supposedly had a magnitude of 7.9.
Fires were the main cause of death in that case, not the quake.

It wasn't the quake this time either.

What's worse, fire or drowning? I would think the fire would be over a little quicker, but more painful.

With a tsunami you might drown, but you're just as likely to be crushed or battered to death by debris. Probably a combination.

Think I'll pass.

Me? Yes.
We could see the water down the road, but it never made it as far as our house. There might have been more waves coming in though (there were plenty), so we headed for a relative's place in the hills and spent the night huddled around a kerosine heater. Didn't get a wink of sleep the first night.

Look, just because the guy was an engineer on the project does not mean he is any better at risk assessment than us idiots who are buying all the bottled water. Assuming he's telling the truth, it sounds possible the company breached regulations. But it's entirely possible their corrective actions were good enough to repair the defect. Case in point: the vessel did not burst (as far as I understand). Now I would strongly prefer not to have greedy companies substituting their own judgment for established regulations, and they should get slapped for that. But it's a stretch for us laymen, and maybe even that engineer, to jump to the conclusion that it was a clear danger to the public.

It looks like the thing worked for 40 years without a problem so obviously is was not as dangerous as the reporter strives to portray.

The Concorde flew for quite sometimes also before somebody decided that not making the landing gear titanium-shard-proof was a hidden defect and start suing the entire engineering team...

Yes, yes, I'm not speaking to the specific danger of individual incidents, but more to the whole thing with these people coming out of the woodwork admitting to helping cover up this or that.

Just because things sort of kind of worked out, doesn't mean people should be absolved for being greedy fuckwits or going along with something they themselves are now saying was dangerous and/or illegal.

The fact that the worst case scenario hasn't happened yet doesn't change the fact that there are cockroaches in my house that have more integrity than these people crawling out from under their rocks after god knows how long to say "I knew this was dangerous umpteen years ago and I know they covered it up because I helped!" and that if they are admitting to illegal and/or (self-professed) dangerous acts, they should be held culpable.

More so if they are only doing it to get themselves on the teevee or for the purposes of an interview or whatever.

You know... some dunce took shortcuts while pouring the propellers of the Charles De Gaulle NPAC...

First few days at sea the propeller broke... and he had to come back on one prop only... the spare was also defective... and lucky we kept props from an older carrier so we could fix it quick, because there aint not duct tape strong enough for this...

When a containment vessel shrink and wrap while it's not supposed to... you can bet you ass that the thing is fubar...

I recall reading somewhere that Japan has/had the only foundry capable of casting a reactor vessel as one single piece, inferior American or European foundries have had to make do with welding those things out of smaller pieces. If they indeed covered up some damage as this guy says, it begs the question how many "undetected" casting flaws each $250 million dollar reactor vessel has.
