Alive in Fukuoka...

Postby BigInJapan » Thu Apr 14, 2016 10:07 pm

Well, that was fun. We had around M4 here in eastern Fukuoka.
Not as long, or quite as strong as 3/11 when we lived in Yokohama, but definitely the biggest shaker we've experienced here.
Friends in Kumamoto city said they are fine, but still on edge (and probably in need of fresh shorts...).

After an earthquake that big there will be aftershocks for quite a while.

Felt nothing here. I'm trying to figure out why they are calling this one a shindo 7. The only casualties I've seen so far are a bunch of watermelons, and some badly made cinder block walls.

Apparently some old homes are no longer fit for habitation, and the owners are advised to see shelter elsewhere. Just what I hear from friends on the ground locally.

That is assuming that they were before the quake. Ages ago we had a quake of similar magnitude and mostly what is did was convince people that maybe it was time to actually do something about dear dead granny's plywood and cinder block shack.

A very good point. I wonder how many are cashing in now when it was long ago a write-off?

Has anything, that wasn't a shack, been destroyed? My friend's shop is messed up but not the structure, just the usual J-clutter fest inside collapsed like dominoes.

Gotta love the added drama to all the reports, with reporters unnecessarily wearing their anzen helmets while reporting....while everyone else, including their own crew, are helmet less.

I have. I was curious, so I looked it up. The shindo scale measures ground acceleration not damage. But when it cames down to it, it is a bit of a shifting goalpost. When it was first introduced in the Meiji it measured damage, but with the improvements in seismology they detemined it by measure phenominion.

Saw some news footage of what looked like very new houses collapsed in a row, looks like they were top heavy. I guess the fact they were built to modern specs made it newsworthy. Or maybe somebody was skimping on the foundations.

One of the learnings from the Kobe earthquake was old folk tend to live in old houses, and the old houses had heavy ceramic tiles, and they tend to bring the house down when it shakes. Hence there were a higher proportion of elderly casualties in the Kobe quake. So gradually all the lovely old roofs began to disappear and now we have flat synthetic slates.

Shame because the kawara tiles look lovely in the sun after the rain.

Also saw a huge mansion block with an enormous crack from top to bottom. The right hand side of it looked like it had sunk a good half metre or so. What was that about piling data being falsified by a leading contractor to save time?

Ehm...

Apparently there is near zero option to provide shelter to people... Portashitter... Army cots... Makes Fema response to Katrina looks like a textbook success... Lucky the weather is turning warmer or these people would be up shit creek without a paddle. Pretty sure everyone feels safer that their taxpayer monies went into new helicopter carriers and type 0 MBTs instead of actually needed stuff...

I think fuse might be a better characterisation but you have a good point. Looks like two structures bridged with a relatively weak structure that will allow each to move independently. Neat.

Yeah, that was rocking & rolling here in Osaka too. Seems it was a 7.1 and only 10km deep. I wonder if that will make yesterday's quakes foreshocks?

Yahoo's quake list shows 1 quake of at least 3 but up to 6 every 10 minutes since the 1:40 quake.

Come on... From the guy who eorked on offshore plateforms.
Two independant structures linked by a bridge... The only surprise is why not using a metal one on rollers (with answer: corrosion / maintenance cost )

Apparently so. The meteorological agency is now saying that the initial M6.5 was a foreshock.

Three more confirmed dead, plus three with no heart or lung function (i.e. also dead, just not confirmed so).
