In before:

-Radiation is good for you
-You just need to smile to be protected from the radiation that is harmless anyway
-Everything is radioactive, the marble counter in your kitchen is as radioactive as plutonium and you're not even dead yet, so you see, it's safe. That or you can use counter tops from the hardware store to make weapons of mass destruction. at this point it gets confusing.
-You are not smart enough to measure the harmless level or harmless radioactivity, it's science and numbers, you can't understand and nobody telling you it's complicamated can explain it in a simple way. It's like the bibul, you read and believe it, if not, you are an heretic and we will burn you on a cross.
-If you wuz as smart as nukular specialist on the telly telling you everything is fine you would understand by yourself what ionizing radiation are and how harmless they are (complicamated things are de facto safer... mmmkayyyy). The proof: x rays are used everyday to cure cancer and they don't even kill people, so you see, radiation are good for everybody since they cure diseases. (*)

(And yes I have been reading some weird shit..)

yeah, that wrestling bisexual midget porn fanfict site you forwarded was a bit over the top...

(*) don't laugh to hard at that reasonning, I read it as a serious debunking argument on several apologist websites... and not even creationnists affiliated ones...

My other favorite one is aboot the children of chernobyl (from a beeb documentary) Yes there was much more thyroid cancer case but after operation they were successfuly cured. So that make it okay... radiation made them cancer easier to cure and therefore saved lives...(biggest analytical shortcut through a swampland ever)
Never mind the fact that if they were able to cure so many it's mainly because they were detected early... because of heavy suspicions...

Surely not plutonium...reported on Safecast in May...Even the government announcement yesterday dates to June/July.

Why are they keeping it a secret until now?

In all fairness, the Japanese government and TEPCO have both been consistently open and transparent in their words and actions since the nuclear crisis broke on March 11...it has been clearly visible that they are liars who persist in withholding pertinent information and have implemented a program centering on bureaucratic inertia to minimize the real cost of this fuck-up, which will only become evident in the coming years.

Fossil of the Day "award"

Had a chuckle over this one:
Japan panned for pushing nuke plant exports after accident
Kyodo
Japan has been given the Fossil of the Day "award" at a U.N. climate change conference in Panama for pushing a scheme to promote its exports of nuclear power generation technologies to developing countries as a way of curbing global warming, an international environmental group said Monday.

So 'hammer what's your take on whether or not the worst struck areas in Tohoku have received funding for cleanup and rebuilding efforts from the government and/or NGO's? Is money getting to where it's needed most or what?

in line with the Japanese safety standard

except that in my understanding, for the US it's: you can go to take picture between 80 and 20 km of the plant but don't waste too much time. While for th Jgov it's: you can go back to live there...

Not the same thing...

You can also go take picture of the Chernobyl plant... but they won't let you put your tent there...

There is an article in the local newspaper, that reports that after extensive research it has been learned that the village of Higashidori has suffered not one or two, but five large tsunamis in the past 1000 years. And guess who has a nuclear power plant built in that town, right on the pacific coast? Tohoku Denryoku!!! Shouldn't they have uncovered this gem of information before they built this plant.
Next we will probably learn that the Rokasho nuclear recycling plant was built on a major fault line or something crazy like that.

yeah, but it's not like you could predict if the next tsunami will be tomorrow or only next weekend, so it's like totally ok to build a plant there... should even put a P4 lab to do some research on small pox and ebola...

I'm still waiting for Joke, er Jack and Sixdipshit to come on here and tell us how Japan leads the world in quality of radiated vegies, fruit and beef, coffee which is absolutely safe cause the can protects the quality chemical mix inside, etc etc.

Looks like Japan is going to have to find a way to fund the NHI better in the wake of all these disasters cause the surge in thyroid cancer, leukemia, and other malignant disease activity is gonna take a huge toll in the future. As it is the Japanese National health system is more expensive as a public system where you have to bring your own utensils etc to hospital and have numbers of people in your room and have to pay to make up for the gap than the top private health insurance schemes in Oz where you pay little to no gap, can get a private room and everything is laid on.

Most of us will be around to see how the 'quality' J health system copes in the future with the fallout of all this and it won't be pretty.

5 tsunamis in 1,000 years? Let me get this right, 5 large tsunamis in 1,000 years? Let's say this is true and that it is material; in the scheme of things, the plant then must have been built to sustain a large tsunami. What's your problem?

The Late Great City of Tokyo

Postby Thug4Life » Mon Oct 10, 2011 1:46 am

We hardly knew ye...

Okutama cesium level seen spiking

By MIZUHO AOKI

Staff writer

An aerial radiation survey of the capital and Kanagawa Prefecture has revealed the northwest tip of Tokyo was tainted by an unusually high amount of fallout, while most other areas showed normal levels, a science ministry official said Friday.

The results, released late Thursday, show that fallout from the Fukushima No. 1 power plant contaminated part of the mountainous Okutama region on Tokyo's western fringe. Radiation readings in the area were the highest of the two prefectures at 100,000 to 300,000 becquerels of radioactive cesium per square meter.

About Okutama:

Ogochi-damu-ko, or Okutama-ko, was formed by the construction of Ogochi Dam in the upstream of Tama River to serve as a reservoir of drinking water for Tokyo metropolitan area. It extends for 4 km in east-west direction, is 1.5 km wide (north-south), and has a water surface of 4.25 km2. The lake is said to be the world's largest among the reservoirs used solely for city water supply. The construction work needed 19 years from November 1938 to November 1957.

Twenty percent of the lake's catchment area belongs to Tokyo Metropolis and the rest to Yamanashi Prefecture. The catchment is mostly mountainous, ranging in altitude from 2,018 m on the top of Mt. Kumotori to about 550 m at the lake surface. Flat lands are limited only to the immediate vicinity of the lake. Mountain slopes are mostly covered by mixed beech-fir forests and evergreen conifer (Cryptomeria) plantations (Q).

The hourly radiation readings in the area hovered between 0.2 and 0.5 microsievert, but a few spots had higher levels between 0.5 and 1.0 microsieverts, science official Hirotaka Oku said.

But don't worry as radiation is good for your teeth and hair! :glow2:
