Ah, the new word I leraned tonight-Iishin

Postby Kuang_Grade » Thu Oct 07, 2004 1:57 am

Here's the US embassy web page on the topic

http://japan.usembassy.gov/e/acs/tacs-7111.html

Here is Tokyo Metro's Gov's English document on the topic....Nice to see that they have already made "road closed due to Earthquake Emergency" signs with happy smiling fish on it (see page 14 of the guide.) It is 86 pages and actually pretty interesting with explainations about the Strangelove-ain sounding "distaster message exchange" It also has romanji phrases for things you are unlikely to find sitting in a phrase book or practcied in class like....When will the water service be restored?.

Well the one this evening was the biggest I had felt since I arrived just over three months ago. Sitting down in a Syalzarria (sp?) and had just ordered as our rather 'rotund' waitress was walking past. My buddy & I looked at eachother then started to giggle aloud as the floor shook.... but it just kept shaking......... honestly, the timing was absolutly perfect for us.

Still on the second floor of the building, it was a little scary when I saw the front doors open/slam shut by about four inches. As I mentioned, definatly the biggest I had felt out here in Yokohama (Utsukushi-Gaoka). I do have a question, with regards to that 'mega' tidle wave, does anyone know if that would crack us way out in Tama Plaza (along the Den-En Toshi line - at the VERY end of the Yokohama Municipal subway line).

Otherwise, hope everyone else fared as well as we did, with nothing more than a giggle and a short video clip (I'll post if anyone's interested)

GuyJean, you and I are all neighbors out here. Tama Plaza elevations vary from 18 ft (5.49 meters) to 60 ft. (18.29 meters). The Kanto Quake of 1923 (Magnitude 8.3) the tsunami measured 36 feet (11 meters). On the wall of the ward office several detailed topographic maps]washed away by a tsunami in 1495.[/url]

The average elevation of all Yokohama is 10 ft (3.05 m)-- in other words, "Get suba gear for your earthquake kit."

I only felt one quake... I was in my dorm room at the time, and the building was essentially vibrating in a circular pattern.

First noticable earthquake I've actually experienced. Alabama isn't exactly a center of faults after all... so I've only felt aftershocks before now.

I personally thought it was interesting :D

ripples

Postby erni » Fri Oct 08, 2004 4:52 pm

have any of you guys heard of the Canary islands? they are these small volcanic islands off the coast of Spain. According to this documentary I saw a few years back, one of the islands volcanoes has a fault in it. they think that one day the island will collapse into the sea, creating a suction effect in the ocean that will create a tsunami so huge that it could destroy the entire east coast of America. According to their satellite data its happened there before couple thousand years ago.
Anyone got any dynamite?

Is that a serious question (re: Heard of the Islands)???

As for the Dynamite, why would you want that? Where are YOU from? I just hope you aren't one of the folks who has hopped onto the 'It's Trendy To Hate The USA' bandwagon... those people irritate me and I'm not even from the USA!

Yeah, no kidding. Countries in the world are not independent of one another. If a major disaster should hit the U.S., it would no doubt have an effect on the economy, industry, food supply, etc., of other countries. I certainly do not wish a large-scale disaster on any country in the world.

But feel free to hate Bush all you like.

Nooper says: 6+, 6.8 richter, 20km deep, 199km from Tokyo.

Hey, there's aftershock #3 - or was that 4? Damn, I'm losing count.

Maybe I should start drinking faster. That way I won't feel it so much when the roof lands on my head tonight. :)

FGNN

Postby mr. sparkle » Sat Oct 23, 2004 6:45 pm

Wow. The FG News Network scopped CNN and even beat ABC.com to the punch.

abc.com wrote:A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 shook northern Japan on Saturday, injuring several people and rocking buildings hundreds of miles away.

The quake, which struck at 5:56 p.m., was centered in the Niigata prefecture about 12 miles beneath the earth's surface, the Meteorological Agency said. Buildings in Tokyo, 160 miles to the southeast, swayed for nearly a minute.

Authorities received reports that several people were injured by objects that fell from shelves, public broadcaster NHK said. Other media reports said the shaking was so severe in some places that people couldn't keep their feet.

Stay safe folks....

Richter numbers, from Nooper: 6.8, 5.9, 5.0, 4.5, 5.9

The epicenter of the 4.5 was less than 1km from the surface, so I'll be the really felt that one, even though it was the weakest of the bunch.

That's the story in the UK...but it seems no-one was hurt...which sounds like great technique by the driver.
