Bill Nye, who makes science videos for kids said some shit in an interview about the reactors that scared the shit out of me. Then they interviewed a nuclear engineer professor from Georgia Tech and he basically said that the problem is already contained but the power plant that used sea water is now dead. It's not going to be any kind of Chernobyl. So, the first guy it was already a Chernobyl and the second guy said it's already fixed besides no longer producing power.

lol, I was referring more to the rampant speculation about a possible nuclear plume being over Tokyo and how unnecessary fine French citizens should leave the Kanto area immediately. But it was google translate so I'm sure its much science based and manly in the original.

Non non , it was grade A bullshit saying that if there is a radioactiv cloud it can be over Tokyo real fast (fineprint... depending on the meteo). Because in a traditionnal French fashion, JUST Tokyo is important... and they sort of forget that the wind move traditionnally east (IT IS the Chernobyl syndrome after all).
It's the same people that send me a congratulation card last time I went to register a death in my family after all...

(Short message for the imbecile grey snotting me and calling me a troll on this thread: If your opinion had any value your snotting would not be grey, so eat shit and die... seriously, and fastly)

Edit 2: While re-reading my posts I can understand a bit better why Chernobyl notice might be misunderstood in what they express. For French it's more aboot the lies than the blow out. The technicalities and their consequences on the ecosystem (political/financial/ecological) were not exactly understood until much later as of the lies being uncovered 10 to 15 years later. Simple things lies destroying contaminated mushrooms or staying a bit indoors until some bad wind change were not done because the governement and the crisis management cell lead by that fucking bastard of Sarkozy decided it would be much better to sleep it of as if nothing had happened.

There's nothing on TV but disaster coverage. Come on people, we only need one channel with the exact same 24 hour coverage.

Ah, okay, now I see what you were trying to say. In the US and Canada when people say "Chernobyl" it is generally in relation to the meltdown, fire, and general disaster itself. Basically people equate it with nuclear power being unsafe and/or dangerous. (Which it is, if you build reactors the way the Soviets did...)

Since we're on the topic of nuclear power, Bill Gates' 2010 TED talk is relevant and very interesting:

[ythd]JaF-fq2Zn7I[/ythd]

If that YouTube embed stops working the original is available on the TED site.

Just lots of FUD-spreading chain mails going around. No one knows if another quake is coming.

It was also a tweet from CNN Breaking news:

Japan agency says 70 percent chance new major #quake in next three days. http://on.cnn.com/fA8njR
From their website:
[6:45 a.m. ET, 7:45 p.m. Tokyo] There is a 70% likelihood that Japan will experience an earthquake of 7.0 or above in the next three days, the country's meteorological agency said.
Takashi Yokota, director the Earthquake Prediction Information Division of the agency said he based his prediction on increased tectonic activity.

Mainichi has a listing of the possible blackout times by area. They've broken prefectures up into groups (perhaps picked out of a hat), but you can find times when you might not want to use the elevator.
I'm kinda brain dead but it seems that Shibuya-ku, Shinjuku-ku, Nakano-ku, Minato-ku, Chuo-ku (the areas around and inside the Yamanote basically) are not scheduled for black outs...maybe I missed it.

Yes, around 9PM they declared Tokyo 23 wards are exempt from blackouts on Monday (except maybe Arakawa-ku). Tuesday is a different story.. they will announce plans by Monday night.

Looks like we will have a morning and evening blackouts here in eastern Shizuoka... your welcome Tokyo a-holes.

Link shows radiation monitoring stations across Japan. Interestingly fukushima and anything above it are "under survey" and not reported. Could be down from the quakes though I guess.

Considering the level of earthquake prediction technology I'm pretty sure they're just pulling numbers out of their asses. Of course when the main quake is 9.0 aftershocks in the ~7 range (1/1000th the energy) aren't surprising...

Some people in Kansai are saying that power will be diverted from here for the Kanto area but I really don't see how that is possible due to the 60Hz 50Hz difference in the grids. I suppose with a big enough transformer anything is possible but I don't have any idea if Japan as something like that in place.

Since Saitama has a high crime reputation (probably due to the high concentration of them gaijin), a few blackouts should help solidify the Saitama legend. Oh, wait, I forgot, this ain't NY, LA, Detroit, etc.

Yeah, I didn't think it was too likely. I'm surprised they can actually move as much as they can, must be some seriously large transformers to accomplish that.

From what I read aboot frequency convertion back in the days. The only way to switch frequencies is to use flywheels. You use engines on one side to turn a flywheel and -sort of- dynamo on the other side to generate what you need.

A better explanation: In a nuke plant you use steam to move turbine to make electricity, for frequency convertion you use electricity to move a shaft to make electricity without a real convertion.

It's a bit like an double convertion unit power supply. The equipment behind is not plugged to the grid, the ups is pluged to the grid to move a flywheel that generate electricity either from an electric engine plugged on the grid or from a diesel engine behind a clutch using the flywheel inertia as a starter
