Italy declares war on Germany

Operation Safe Sea could mean €200 penalties for anyone trying to mark their place on country’s public beaches

It’s enough to take the shine off a summer holiday: arriving at the beach first thing in the morning to find the best spots already occupied by towels, deckchairs and umbrellas.

Now the Italian coastguard has decided enough is enough.

Authorities from the coasts of Tuscany to Sardinia are cracking down on holidaymakers who seek to reserve prime beach territory by leaving their gear out overnight, with those responsible facing fines of €200 (£170).

(For those of you not familiar with European holiday culture, Germans have a reputation for getting up early in the morning to reserve prime beach and pool spots with strategically placed towels).

And on the same theme but not beach towels:

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

When I would go to Italy for beach holidays (that was in the 1960ies mind you), every beach had their deck chair and umbrella rental service, so you would rent a space for the two or three weeks that you'd be there. And you'd start way in the back row. Whenever someone went home, everyone behind them would be moved a space and towards the end of your holiday, you'd end up in the front row.

Very well thoght out organisation and enforced with almost Prussian assertiveness, you could as well think that you were in Germany. Most tourists were freom there anyway. And we would eat "Gelati Alemagna", for sure as hell not Italian ice cream :)

Haven't been in Rimini since then, though...

That sounds like something you'd see here...

I'm used to California beaches though, finding a decent spot is not usually an issue when there is soooo much beach...parking is another story.

They call it "the grill of Teutons" or similar ("Teutonengrill" in German)

How else would you want to spend every day of three weeks.

Ha, in Holland they have the reputation to dig their own personal hole on the beach and consider it their property the days after that until they return to Germany.

Good memories...

That doesn't like like a lot of fun...

Reminds me of hanami season here with people using blue tarps to save spots in the park and then fucking off all day till their group's party starts.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. I've actually thrown some of those tarps off to the side if no one was around to claim it.

Why waste a perfectly good tarp? I just use what's there till they show up and then pretend I didn't know better.
