"Doner kebab 'inventor' Kadir Nurman dies in Berlin"

Postby yanpa » Mon Oct 28, 2013 6:49 am

Auntie Beeb wrote:The Turkish immigrant credited with inventing the doner kebab has died in Berlin aged 80.

Kadir Nurman set up a stall in West Berlin in 1972, selling grilled meat and salad inside a flat bread.

He had noticed the fast pace of city life and thought busy Berliners might like a meal they could carry with them.

While there are other possible "doner inventors," Mr Nurman's contribution was recognised by the Association of Turkish Doner Manufacturers in 2011.

The combination of juicy meat, sliced from a rotating skewer, with all the trimmings and optional chilli sauce, has since become a firm fast-food favourite in Germany, and elsewhere.

...more (with garlic sauce)...

People actually immigrated into East Germany in the 70s? Learn something new every day.

West Berlin wasn't exactly East Germany. Besides, a lot of people from developing nations did immigrate to countries on the other side of the Iron Curtain.

Anyway, on a more important note, when will the Turkish kebab vendors in Tokyo actually start making a decent kebab (or gyros as they are properly called in the Christian world)?

YES! Tokyo has the worst street Doner Kebab in the known universe--Even toxic hell-holes like Shanghai have better, grrr.

(I suspect that Tokyo's kebab trucks are using waste motor oil to fuel the kebab burners and never refrigerated kebab rat meat.)

Yeah, I've had kebabs in both Vietnam and Korea that put the Japanese version to shame. And they weren't even that good.

Locally, a Turk opened a food stall in a few locations. When the man himself is there serving customers, they are filled with meat, a bit of cabbage for garnish, and as much or as little sauce as you request. If his J-staff are serving, you get a cabbage sando with a dash of meat and sauce for garnish.

I was once nearly killed by a shawarma in Paris near Austerlitz stashiun... Three bites in and I was projectile vomiting in the street, nearly run over by a semi...

Cabbage on Kebab is a crime against Nature and almost as evil as Japanese cabbage tacos.

(Using hideous hyper-sweet Japanese mayo rather than a proper yoghurt base for the sauce is also an abomination. Then again, I have nearly choked and drowned on Belgian mayo slimed kebab, yuck.)

The former GDR imported a lot of Vietnamese workers to cover labour shortages caused by significant parts of their population buggering off to where the doners were. After the collapse of the East's economy a lot of them lost their jobs but Vietnam didn't want them back, so it was quite a common scene in the early 90s to see young Vietnamese guys hawking contrabrand cigarrettes on the streets (and playing a cat-and-mouse game with the police). Nowadays they've graduated to gastronomy ("Thai-Sushi") and the 2nd generation all seem to run nail salons.
