Munich shooting: Police say nine dead as manhunt continues
German police are engaged in a huge anti-terror manhunt in the city of Munich after nine people died in a shopping mall shooting.

Police are investigating whether one of the bodies is that of a perpetrator.

The attackers were earlier reported still on the run. Witnesses said they had seen three with guns. Police urged people to avoid public places.

The attack was at the Olympia mall in the north-western Moosach district. Public transport has been suspended.

Seems to be an individual with dark hair.

Edit: Seems it is not Islamist terrorism.

Police said they did not believe the attack was the work of an Islamist group. Witnesses reported one gunman shouting “f------ foreigners” and “f------ Turks”.

Edit2: According to the Daily Mail, the following dialog was heard.

Balcony man: 'You fucking asshole you...'

Gunman: 'Because of you I was bullied for 7 years...'

Balcony man: 'You wanker you. you're a wanker'

Gunman: '...and now I have to buy a gun to shoot you'

Balcony man: 'A gun! Fuck off! Your head should be cut off you asshole'

The gunman and balcony man begin shouting at each other.

Balcony man apparently to people filming: 'He's got a gun here the guy has one'

Unseen voice: 'Fucking Turks!'

Balcony man: 'Fucking foreigner'

Balcony man to someone else: 'Ey! He's got a gun! He has loaded his gun. Get the cops here. He's walking around here the wanker!'

Gunman: 'I am German.'

Balcony man: 'You're a wanker is what you are'

Gunman: 'Stop filming!'

Balcony man: 'A wanker is what you are. What the fuck are you doing?'

Shooter: 'Yeah what, I was born here.'

Balcony man: 'Yeah and what the fuck you think you're doing?'

Gunman: 'I grew up here in the Hartz 4 (unemployment benefits in Germany) area.'

Balcony man and Shooter talk at same time.

Balcony man: 'Yeah treatment is something for you'

Gunman: 'I haven't done anything here for (unintelligible) ... 'Please shut your mouth'

Balcony man: 'You cunt you'

Balcony man to people nearby: 'Hey, he's on the upper floor here.'

The cameraman goes into cover as the gunman starts firing. Balcony man calls him a cunt again.

Balcony man: 'They must have been shitting into your head'

Gunman: 'They have not. They have not, that's the thing. They have not.'

I assume you tender souls will be shocked to read some real words instead of the a*****e, w****r, F**k, F*****g, c**t , and s******g the Mail restricts itself to...

So, if this reporting is credible, the shooter is probably a Turkish German who was frustrated with life in Germany.

Never mind all that. He has some Islam in his background somewhere, doesn't he? More evidence that Muslims as group of 1.6 billion people have declared war on us! Gotta get em all!

But you raise a key point, polarization is at the root of this.

(Video)

It's striking what a difference there is between listening to people who are actually expert on counter terrorism and people who simply know a bit and have an robust opinion. There was someone expert on Radio 5 this morning saying pretty much exactly the same thing as that video. ISIS's desperately needs recruits. The attacks in Europe are not an end in themselves - They are designed to stir up as much fear and hatred of muslims as possible and a strong reaction against all muslims. And then ISIS will be able to recruit many more young muslims to their cause because of the injustice they face.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

the shooter is probably a Turkish German who was frustrated with life in Germany

piled micro-racisms or micro-aggressions in daily life make them antisocial and violent. frown face, clicking tongue, spitting as passing each other and ignoring, detached attitude etc. each one is way too trivial to accuse or shout "its racism!" in public. but many a little makes a mickle.
i think you gaijin dudes living in japan do understand how those muslims feel there, though.

You mean the one which looks like German spelt funny and odd word usage which feels like it's trying to be English and which is surprisingly easy to decipher if you're familiar with both?

Yes, that one, but that is not the reason we invented our language.

We just wanted to have a compact word for the female anatomy, even more compact than the English equivalent, that is.

Afrikaans doesn't like your cu(r)tness.

Going through those wikipedia links, you are competing with the French and the Scots Gaelic. Thai, however, slays you all in getting to the heart of the matter with fewer phonemes.

Endless fun substituting for the English male personal pronoun to slyly insult people when speaking English. "Key" (shit in Thai) was another one but not nearly as useful.

How did someone get hold of a firearm at all? It's not like you can pop down to Walmarts in Germany (well you could for a short while but they were sent packing by the local competition).

Europe isn't Japan, there are quite a few individuals here who shoot for sport and/or hunting and are legally permitted to own firearms. And not just .22's neither. Getting one legally is an extremely inhibitive and involved affair though, with lots and lots of checks and combined years worth of waiting periods before you are allowed to own what would be considered a "normal" handgun in the US. Having it on you in public is still out of the question, of course.

Source: a colleague of mine is a marksman.

This situation in Munich was more like a shooting spree the likes of which have been far too common in Germany over the past decade. Hardly a repeat of 1972.

In Europe, the borders are porous and the gun-laws vary from country to country. OTOH the weak point of laws of any kind is that they only apply to law-abiding folks (Captain obvious here :)). And lazy folks. Not to the bad boys; if you really want a gun, you can get one, just like you can get drugs, drivers-licenses, degrees, passports, contents of bank-vaults etc.

Exactly right... another colleague of mine (of the Moroccan persuasion, entirely unrelated I'm sure) boasted he could hook me up with people from his old neighborhood who could sell me an AK the same day. These are usually from Czechia or from one of the bits which used tot make up Yugoslavia.
