Russian Shenanigans

Postby Grumpy Gramps » Thu Oct 13, 2016 12:53 am

Russian Government Officials Told To Immediately Bring Back Children Studying Abroad

Zerohedge wrote:In Europe, when it gets serious, you have to lie... at least if you are an unelected bureaucrat like Jean-Claude Juncker. In Russia, however, when it gets serious, attention immediately turns to the children.

Which is why we read a report in Russian website Znak published Tuesday, according to which Russian state officials and government workers were told to bring back their children studying abroad immediately, even if means cutting their education short and not waiting until the end of the school year, and re-enroll them in Russian schools, with some concern. The article adds that if the parents of these same officials also live abroad "for some reason", and have not lost their Russian citizenship, should also be returned to the motherland. Znak cited five administration officials as the source of the report.

The "recommendation" applies to all: from the administration staff, to regional administratiors, to lawmakers of all levels. Employees of public corporations are also subject to the ordinance. One of the sources said that anyone who fails to act, will find such non-compliance to be a "complicating factor in the furtherance of their public sector career." He added that he was aware of several such cases in recent months.

It appears that the underlying reason behind the command is that the Russian government is concerned about the optics of having children of the Russian political elite being educated abroad, while their parents appear on television talking about patriotism and being "surrounded by enemies."

[...]

But what he said next was more disturbing: "On the one hand, this is all part of a package of measures to prepare the elites for some 'big war' even if it is rather conditional, on the other hand - this is another blow to the unity of President Putin with his own elite" Belkovsky said.

I don't think Russia wants to get involved in a major war, so I'm going to assume that this is a political move, but still ... creepy.

Tis worrying to say the least but I agree, more likely political than prepping for some sort of war.

Mother Russia.... no...
The NATO frathouse... not so sure...

There have been way too many acts of antagonisation against Russia in the previous years. I sometimes wonder if the excessively low price of oil barrels/gas are not a first strike move designed to torpedo the Russian economy.

A propaganda war seems to be in full swing, though.

Interestingly, most of the Russian propaganda (that I have seen) seems to be well crafted. The reasoning has hand and foot, the logics pan out; you'd almost believe it. OTOH the western propaganda (that I have seen) seems to be more "trumpesque". Allegations not underpinned by anything, insults, finger pointing; you'd almost dismiss it :)

Putin always sounds very reasonable in interviews. I can see why he's been able to hold onto power. He's slicker than slicker than Slicky Willy.

Yeah, Putin is smooth.

I hate to say it, but I'm beginning to think that the US might benefit from a dicta... oops, I mean "leader" like that.

And I reckon Putin fancies his chances of manipulating Donald more than Hillary hence his support for Donald's campaign - of which this is likely a part. Do we believe Hillary when she says Wikileaks is part of it as well and being run by Putin's people?

It's true that their hackers and sources only seem to have success with US networks rather than Russian, or in fact anyone else's. And it's true that Russia is sheltering at least one Wikileaks fugitive.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

That was my gut reaction at first reading, but still a very creepy crawly move even if they are only ramping up the Great Mother Russia rhetoric. I am sure the news and rumours of a mass return will go down like cheap vodka with all the Russian Trumpers that seem to so adore Poutine.

Russian telecom regulator ‘blacklists’ itself

Russia Today wrote:In an apparent error Russia’s telecom regulator has attempted to ban an IP address reserved for “this computer,” an online freedom watchdog noticed, sarcastically adding that the agency tried to “ban itself.”

The gaffe happened on Saturday, when Roskomnadzor processed a ruling of the Moscow City Court to block a website infringing on copyright.

The entry of the blacklist, which Russian internet service providers use to enforce blocks for their users, listed the website name, karaoke-besplatno.ru as well as its IP address, the four numbers that identify nodes of a computer network.

The problem was that the address they put in was 127.0.0.1...

A group of former Philadelphia Flyers are heading to Russia for a series of exhibition games this month, and they may face Vladimir Putin.

Joe Watson, a Flyers defenseman from the 1970s who has helped organize the event, told the Camden (New Jersey) Courier-Post that the Russian president wants to play.

With only half a million people living in Sakhalin, the bridge will never become economically viable, according to Natalya Zubarevich, head of regional studies at Moscow's Independent Institute for Social Policy, who says a more sensible solution is to improve the existing ferry service. The island is home to Russia's first liquefied-natural-gas plant and already linked to the mainland with pipelines for oil and gas. There isn't enough demand to move people and resources such as timber to warrant a bridge, according to the Gaidar Institute's Zemtsov.

For now, the assumption is that borrowed money will be used for the Sakhalin project, requiring no budget resources, two of the people said. Loans from Japanese banks may be another possible source of funding, according to the person close to Russian Railways.

Would be nice. With the two bridges, I could just drive home to Europe. No more need for the hassle of security checks, check-ins and baggage limits, no dogs allowed, no booze in the shoes etc etc on bloody airports.

People already did drive to Europe, using the car ferry, until it stopped operation a few years ago.

If a car ferry is uneconomic, so is a bridge.

Apparently travelling across Siberia is extremely boring, lots of insects and not much else.

I once toyed with the idea of riding a motorcycle across, asked around and was dissuaded. So instead I opted to spend my life chained to a computer terminal ........................................

Not for you the call of the taiga eh? I'm developing a yen to do some touring around Khabarovsk having seen it from the air - just a unique landscape. As for the rest of it I'm not so sure. I get bored just flying over it. It looks deadly dull. Except for the last bit towards Finland. All those lakes.

Yup... already in 2003 when i arrived I was always surprised by the lack of bugs on the car despite back then often taking expressways. These days I was more blaming slow city driving. But few trip to Hamamatsu with weird 80kph speed limit was not bringing much splatter either.
Trains are the same, local operators should have data on their needed cleaning schedules. In the 80' Parisian train stations were giant bird feeding grounds. Maybe bullet trains are sleeker...

Back in the 80' I'm sure Renault's crash survivability included the bug layer cushion effect to reach the proper legal specs...

Citing “systematic manipulation” of anti-doping rules, the International Olympic Committee announced Tuesday it has banned Russia from the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. An 14-person panel had been mulling a confidential IOC report that detailed Russia’s official doping program during the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and the extensive cover-up.

As a result of this ban, no Russian officials will be allowed to attend the games. Their flag will be excluded from any display, and if any “clean” Russian athletes are given permission to attend, they won’t be competing under the Russian flag. They’ll compete under the name “Olympic Athlete from Russia” (OAR) and the Olympic flag, any medals they win won’t be credited to Russia and the Olympic anthem will be played in any ceremony.
