This thing is generating quite a buzz.

It's sorta, almost, *gasp* ... Ferrari-like.
I don't hate it, but I'm still not sure whether I really like it either.

As a concept car I guess it pushes all the right buttons though. Whether any of this trickles down to a production car ... we'll have to wait and see. I suspect they're at least planning on it though, because all of a sudden Honda has gone all serious about pushing some advanced designs into production and there's no way Toyota are going to be left behind. Interesting times. And it's about fcuking time.

They can't be the same red colour.
Ferrari has a patent on "Ferrari Red" so nobody else can use it on a (production) car.

Nyah nyah nyah ...

Tamiya have a license agreement and sell Ferrari Red spray can for plamodel. So with enough of them (100 or 200 might be enough) Totoya can totally paint it the same red...

They do?
I didn't know that (but for some reason I'm not ashamed of not knowing that).

I guess if you're going to build a plastic model of a Ferrari you're going to want the right red. Cool.

The pedant deep inside of me is reaching out and making me type "trademark, not patent."

And while I do not dispute that strange decisions are made in the world of intellectual property, is it really so that Ferrari has a trademark in all markets preventing the use of the longstanding, traditional Italian Racing Colour by all manufacturers? The other Italian manufacturers, to say the least, took this lying down?
It is a pretty sad state of affairs, and they must severely lack confidence in their product if they fear that someone will be confused if they see a red Corolla and think that it is a Ferrari.

I think what it is, is that they patented the process by which the pigment is made. Matching the colour exactly through any other process is difficult, and that's their protection. At least I think that's how it works.

You can buy Ferrari Red paint, but it is nose-bleed expensive.

Ahh, OK. It seems that this article backs you up and it certainly seems far more authoritative than any yahooanswers crud.

According to that article, the patent (held by a pigment manufacturer, not by the car maker itself) has expired, it is now a free-for-all.

There are articles behind paywalls suggesting that Ferrari managed to register a trademark within Italy over the colour, but then other articles in the Intellectual Property field expressly about the prancing horse fail to mention what would be a very notable fact of a colour trademark. I was very

You're just mad you'll have to see a few of these rolling around your area

Honestly though, I agree with all the design cues you mention but I do like the outcome of the mix. Wonder what actually makes it to production though...
