Taro, a quick look in our members list reveals the following suspect users (i.e., users with strange names who signed up a couple of years ago but have 0 posts). Time to ban those? I think it is better to not even ask them, because their names are unlikely to be those chosen by real users. This is just the tip of the iceberg. We won't get rid of this problem of hate PMs as long as no drastic action is taken.

I am banning them as fast as you post them.
But, and it's a big butt, my Moderator interface has been flaky for at least six months and as Russel noted anyone I ban is not really banned. I think when I hit "Permanent Ban" the forum software just sends a warning to the offender.

For example, today at 12:06 I permanently banned "demfromva433du" but just checked and at 12:14 the ever-charming demfromva433du is still a member. I will try some other methods like dumping my board cookies, but so far nothing seems to be effective. I guess only the Great and Wonderous, TentacleOfDoom is able do the banning.

I thought only members on the list could be "banned."
I.e. You have to know who they are to prevent them from using the board.

The other option is to delete the user, which is the only way to remove them from the list, I think.

Saaa, I don't have the level of authority to "Delete User"--- Just as well since I make a hell of a lot of mistakes using the Moderator Control Panel (which is obscenely/obtusely designed).

All - when we ban users, it does not remove them from the members list. I believe it has always been this way.. at least, it has been for the last few years. Remember we've unbanned perma-banned users in the past. They were on the user list the whole time they were banned, if I'm not mistaken. That doesn't mean they can log in.

Russell, I spot checked about 5 of the names in the list you posted. They were all banned already.

Is Russell's note just based on the user still being on the user list? That's normal and not a malfunction. Or was somebody actually able to post or send PMs after banning? If the latter, then I'm surprised, but yes, we would need to go to the Great Tentacle for help. That sounds like a bug.

I saw the names on the Banned Users List, but the forum software's design of showing banned users as "Members" is counter-intuitive.
It's so back-assward I have been told about this design 'feature' before and still cannot remember it.

For Russell's peace of mind, I also banned his entire list of "suspect users," many/most who have been banned before as Omae Mona said.

I only checked a member's status in the members list, but if there is another way to see whether someone is banned, I would be happy to know.

Yeah, as far as I know this forum software has never publicized who is/isn't banned. Please do speak up if you are seeing continued messages from any user who has been declared as banned, by a moderator. Otherwise I think everything is working per specs.
