Charismatic pop artist's huge sculpture displayed at Roppongi Hills

Tokyo's Roppongi Hills is displaying a large work of contemporary art by pop artist Takashi Murakami, who designed Louis Vuitton's highly popular "Cherry Blossom" and "Eye Love" lines, until Sept. 25.
The unique artwork, set up in the lotus-filled pond at Roppongi Hills's Mohri Garden, is a seven-meter-high sculpture entitled "Tongari-kun -- Mr. Pointy and The Four Guards." The statue, painted in about 400 colors, represents an image of Buddha modernized by Murakami who is well versed in art history and tradition as well as youth subculture.
He first displayed the sculpture at Rockefeller Center in New York in 2003.
"I'm very happy to have this exhibition fused with the fantastic view of the surroundings," said Murakami at the opening ceremony of the display being held for the first time in Japan.
