Heroes for Japan?

Postby Taro Toporific » Thu Jan 16, 2003 11:43 am

The greater question here is, do Japanese men even have a self-image?
Japan men decry lack of home-grown heros
"On Japan's leading fashion boulevard, Omotesando, Japanese male role models are almost nonexistent. A recent survey of images from L'Oreal to Benetton to the Gap counted 17 white males, 16 white women, one black woman, one David Beckham, nine Japanese women, but not a single Japanese male face....Imagine if you were in New York or Paris and every model was Japanese..."---The International Herald Tribune, 14 Jan.

equating fashion models with "heroes" (or the lack of.., in this case) is rather silly.
Now if someone were to write an article decrying the lack of positive Japanese female role-models for school age Japanese girls, then I'd say that would a topic well worth investigating. I have a daughter that's why I wrote "positive Japanese female role-models"; if I had a son I'd have written "positive Japanese male role-models other than Anpanman" :biggrin2:

Aren't most of the companies on Omote Sando from US or Europe? Gap and Benetton have "International faces" representing their products globally.

However, I am yet to see anything than a Japanese male on a Japanese beer commercial... 8O

The Smap guys are everywhere...

Agree with gaijinzilla about the lack of positive female role models.. however this is a global issue with Japan the worst of a bad lot.

I'll fix it!!
Let me all hear you cry..

Yeah we want more cute half-naked Japanese boys on ads!!!! Gimme gimme gimme!

Which reminds me - when I was in Hong Kong the were ads of a young, spunky Japanese actor (forgotten his name but he was in Battle Royale) everywhere

It was a good thing.

Think the term "heros" (sic) is just shorthand to reduce the character count and shorten the title.

Anpanman is a worthy hero---as a snack item, less so.

Just remove "ed" from this website and add "please" to the front...

Sorry, that was uncalled for.

I was thinking more along the lines of a name for a half-naked Japanese boy fan site...

Still it might work... :D

I hope that the Mix Master hit the big time, but I suspect his visa "issues" caught up with him.

Would 240000 yen's worth of 2000 yen bills and the rest in 500 yen coins be alright, instead? :toothy:
By the way, about those 500 yen coins....old ones or new ones? :winka:

How about taking all my 500 won coins? You know, the ones with drill marks on them. Wait, wait... I've got a color laser printer that'll do 3000 dpi too.

Hey.. like color laser printer 10,000yen notes and Korean-made 500 yen coin are good for randsoming an FG, right? :o

Actually, I do see Japanese male models but maybe not in Omotesando. One thing that bugs me in Japan is that you absolutely never hear Japanese songs/music in the stores. Go shopping anywhere or in cafes, never will you hear Ayu, only English songs.
