Buying Insurance In Japan?

Postby B Gallagher » Sat Sep 17, 2005 3:36 pm

Hello all,

I'm going to be heading over to Japan in a couple of weeks on exchange to study at University, along with ichigo_partygirl.

We've both got travel insurance for the dates of and immediately surrounding our flights both there and back. We've also got something set up whereby we pay a certain amount and have health insurance for the full time we're there (just under a year).

However, I was just wondering, as a gaijin studying in Japan (ie. Student Visa), is it possible to get insurance on stuff like my laptop, camera, etc - personals.

Are there any Japanese companies which will let gaijins sign up for insurance for the time span of about a year? Does anyone know any info about this?

Thanks all! :D Can't wait to go!! :D

"Let you sign up"!? Sheeee-it, your rental agent will do everthing in his power to make you buy renter's insurance when you sign a lease. Just ask if they forget to explain about. They will be more than happy to include "riders" to broaden your coverage and the price I pay is less than 30,000yen for a two-year lease.

I'll be living at a dorm.. so I won't have a rental agent. Sorry, I should have mentioned that in my original post.

Often your school will offer various types of insurance. Ask them first.

If you're under age of 21, you should be able to be covered under your parents homeowners insurance with a special added 'rider' (very cheap--that's always a best deal).

You can buy travelers insurance in your home country which will be cheap than Japan. Look for: TRAVEL INSURANCE FOR STUDENTS: 8 - 35 YEARS OLD
UNIVERSITY - LANGUAGE SCHOOLS - INTERNSHIPS

There's also ex-pat insurance
