I had a shaolin kempo instuctor like that. After my favorite teacher got canned for giving private lessons in the dojo, this drill instructor came in who didn't know shite and made the students run down by the freeway as part of their belt tests. I stopped going and apparently, so did most of the other students, and the school folded after three months.

If Japan had proper liability laws and the judges willing to enforce them no one would ever try to pull this sort of BS.

School sports coaching in Japan often amazes me by the 1950's nature of it. Coaches are most often OB who were either pro of semi-pro. Modern training regimens and tools are not applied, and coaches rarely have any grasp of sports pyschology.
