Not as much fun as Rob Pongi's Porno Origami Thread but today's Japan Times features Joseph Wu's Origami - the man's web site here
Apparently
the growing emphasis on artistic value has led many origami folders to transcend the one-sheet-only idea. "My dragon took five sheets," [said Wu]"I probably could have done it with one but I was more interested in the effect than the rule."

An origami version of a Star Wars fighter surely qualifies as an all-round Olympic decathlete standard otaku achievment

Via Boing-Boing this house looks a lot better than the normal concrete "mansion" here. I better start folding!

Origami House

...House exhibition ...a culmination of many months of planning, hard work folding, fun and many late nights, the show opened quietly and has only begun to awe visitors to the gallery....

Asahi: Discovering the infinite that exists inside a simple piece of paper
... A book on the craft awaits customers in the mathematics section of bookstores. "Origami no Suri to Kagaku" (The mathematical principle and science of origami) was translated from an English collection of research papers on origami. The translation was overseen by Toshikazu Kawasaki, who earned a Ph.D. in mathematical science for his research on origami. In his doctoral thesis, Kawasaki arrived at a theorem: "If a circle drawn inside a quadrangle touches all sides, the paper can be folded into a crane." Although the theorem does not hold for rectangular paper, pieces of rhomboid-shaped paper-and, of course, square paper-can be fashioned into cranes...more...

Not to be confused with Origasmi

Kelly Pierce spends hours folding small pieces of paper for her origami projects...that ultimately won a blue ribbon at the Iowa State Fair.....
"You're only limited by your imagination," she said....
"I'm folding with tweezers and a magnifying glass," she says. "I want to see just how small I can go."....more....

Knowing when to fold
Engineers use 'nano-origami' to build tiny electronic devices

MIT News - February 26, 2009
Folding paper into shapes such as a crane or a butterfly is challenging enough for most people. Now imagine trying to fold something that's about a hundred times thinner than a human hair and then putting it to use as an electronic device.
A team of researchers led by George Barbastathis, associate professor of mechanical engineering, is developing the basic principles of "nano-origami," a new technique that allows engineers to fold nanoscale materials into simple 3-D structures. The tiny folded materials could be used as motors and capacitors, potentially leading to better computer memory storage, faster microprocessors and new nanophotonic devices...more...
