Engrish Press conference

Postby canman » Fri Oct 14, 2005 8:48 am

Did any of you catch the press conference held at the Foreign correspondants club, by the big three? Koizumi's irls gave a really good press conference in English. I was quite impressed with their language ability. Then this morning the wide shows are criticizing their pronunciation, and the like. No wonder nobody can speak English in this country. As soon as you try, they make fun of you, and point out your smallest errors. One woman was talking about security and instead of saying nine eleven, she said nine one one. This dink professor from some US shcool said of that is a big mistake as nine one one is like the Japanese 119. Ha ha. And another mispronounced the word election, and of course said erection. But come on people they were doing their best. This is one think I really dislike about Japan, when it seems one person is getting ahead or the lime light lets bash them and bloody them.

Here's a Kyodo rundown...
LDP's 'madonna' trio meet foreign press
Kyodo via Japan Today
TOKYO — Kuniko Inoguchi, Satsuki Katayama and Yukari Sato — three of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's most highly publicized new parliamentarians — entertained foreign correspondents in Tokyo on Thursday with witty responses in English on issues ranging from their political platforms to their views on gender equality and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

The trio, dubbed by local media as the "madonnas of reforms" handpicked by Koizumi to run against LDP rebels in the Sept 11 general election, all raised their hands immediately when asked if they thought the premier should stay on after his term expires in September next year. The three, who have all held high-profile careers before running in the election, drew laughter from the audience with occasional jokes throughout the 90-minute session.

This afternoon the Wide shows have seemed to have changed their coverage of the press conference. Now its a little bit more like"wow these ladies are smart". But of course they soon showed the poster boy for the LDP, Mr. Taizo Sugimura out campainging fot he next election, like he was the brains behind the show.

That behaviour isn't limited to Japan. That happens anywhere somebody is a tall poppy. Nobody wants to be lonely in their inability to achieve anything.

And, just like they criticise them for speaking English, you criticise them for criticising them, and now I'm criticising you for criticising the people who ciriticised somebody else!

And AWAY WE GO!

$173k sounds like a lot of money, but the story is from an ozzie rag, so that's ozzie pesos. A hundred ozzie pesos are only worth like a nickel in real US currency.

And perhaps even enough to pay for that surgical procedure you require, Charlie.
