Selling a Computer

Postby sludge » Sun Oct 16, 2005 2:47 pm

Hey guys I have a computer I would like to sell

It is a
Dell Dimension (English Win XP)
1.8 GHz
80 Gig Hard Drive
Built in CD Player & Floppy
512 Megs Ram
15 Inch Screen
External DVD
Nice Speakers
All in One printer
& a Bubble Jet Cannon Printer
(All ADSL/Cable Ready)

Does anyone have any Idea what I could get for this? Or what would be a reasonable price?

Anyone Interested?

How much depends somewhat on where you are and if you can drop off and/or easily ship the computer.

I don't know what the printers are worth really, but the machine itself, probably.....Around 50,000yen if you can deliver it or box & ship it, and around 40,000 if you want to try to attract someone to drag it home.

Both of those might be too high, especially if the buyer knows how to find the discount Dells online. 2.8GHz Celeron Dells with 17" TFTs can be had for 60,000yen or so sometimes!!

If anyone is interested I can regularly post the Dell sale info that I get...

Call or visit the PC-&-porn chain store "HARD-OFF"
Image They will give you an estimate over the phone of the "cash price" of your used equipment.

Also you should try physically visiting PC Depot and similar stores to look at their used computer prices.

Finally, look at the JapanToday free classified ads for computers. If you offer set up help (and delivery in your area) you can sell it with a lot more ease.

I've sold and purchased a few PC's through classifieds.japantoday.com with good results. I think 5man would be a good asking price for what you have. Of course, you wouldn't be alone if you decided to ask for loads more. Some of the ads on that site/mag make me laugh.

depends on whether the screen is LCD or CRT.

All in all between 25000-40000 yen... depends on condition, and so on the used market.

You'll get more out of a private sale than with a company.

Yeap, Dimensions are desktops. IkemenTommy is not as smart as he likes to think he is. ;)

Unfortunately a 15" CRT is going to drop the resale value of that machine quite a bit. Try asking 40,000 with delivery & setup, but to be honest that is a bit on the high side. The delivery & setup might make it worth it for someone who wants no hassle though...

Some people are willing to pay extra for delivery, setup, dealing with the seller in English, and getting an English OS from the start. I think he could get 35,000 to 40,000 for his machine from the right buyer.

The Dell prices are great, but price is not the only factor for all buyers. Also, the vast majority of the population does not have access to those special Dell sale sites.

No, but a simple phone call to Dell Direct will get you in the deal.

No, actually it won't. Give it a try and see.

When the 24" Display was on sale for 79,000 via the mail offers the absolute best global-account-preferred-customer price was 92,000. Someone I know nearly got stuck paying that for one until I sent him the link for the mail offer.

I've bought a 20 in monitor for a friend at 40 or 50,000 yen through one of the corporate deals before without a problem. When they asked how I was going to pay for it, I told them to bill it under my name and not the company. I paid by COD. But the catch is, I talked to the same Dell rep I've talked to for years, so your results may vary.

Sure, but you have to actually know the deal exists before you can take advantage of it. Most people don't, and prodding a Dell sales rep will get you nowhere. You need the information before you can get the deal.

Anyone with a Hojin account through Dell gets the weekly newsletters with the deals. This is not insiders' deal info.

Which would be what, about 0.25% of the general population? And a likely even smaller percentage of the FG population? It isn't top-secret for sure but I would say that very few FGs in Japan are aware of these deals or how to get them.

Also, while almost all business account holders get the same paper catalogue, not all businesses get the same email. There are probably ones with even better deals than what I get, and I know there are ones that have worse deals cause I have seen them.

Have to side with Tommy on this one. The telephone Dell "associates" will often give you a 10-20% cheaper price than ANY deal you find on the net.

Reason being, they work on a per sale commission... and if they don't meet quotas they can be fired.

 Matching aliases.

Yeap, I know you can negotiate discounts when you call the reps. I have done it myself and come out well. I played a bit of a different angle though -- was purchasing multiple PCs for business use and played the "other vendor" game.

The prices I get by email are often 30% or more below web promotional prices already. This week there was a Precision 380 that was over 50% off web prices. The 2405FPW in Japan is 157,500 normally, and is on sale now for 92,800. It was available through their email marketing for 79,000, a further 15% off. I suppose if one was fluent enough in Japanese to talk to the J-reps here and good enough negotiating (again, in Japanese), you might get a bit more... Not that much though, even using the 20 to 30% figures in the other post.

In the end though, no matter how good a deal, a better one is always available to someone else. ;) Heh, and next week is always a bit cheaper than last week.
