When the Diet was dissolved last summer, its members did what they always do on such an occasion: in unison they raised their hands in the air and shouted "banzai" three consecutive times. Foreigners witnessing this ritual aren't the only ones who find it rather strange. Lots of Japanese do too. But ask the people why the banzai cheer takes place and where it comes from, and a majority will respond with a shrug. What's more, you'll likely get the same response if you ask about the origins and circumstances behind a host of other unique -- some would say bizarre -- customs this country is famous for: from putting pickles on curry to charging tenants exorbitant sums in the form of "key money." The mysteries in Japan are answered in this tiny little article. Wow. Why can't people just get over the fact that Japan has a totally unique culture? Instead, people always try to analyze all the irregularities and the idiotic things that exist here. Japan is not a Western nation, if that is news to anyone, so quit making all these comparisons with the rest of the world.. duh. Shocking, yes at first, but everything becomes the norm once you live here long enough. There is no mystery about it.

Sounds like you've been doing a little analyzing of your own, eh fuckwit? Idiotic? Irregular? Are you one of these loopy happy-assed gaijin who bought a soroban on your way to your aikido lessons?

Judge, and prepare to be judged, dude. I'm allowed to find it strange that j-folk do strange things, just as they are allowed to find it 'sugoi' that I am quite skilled with chopsticks.

Ummm, just off the top of my head...
gyoza, shumai, chahan, tofu - Chinese import.
chopsticks - Chinese import.
Buddhism - Korean/Chinese import.
Kanji - Chinese import.
School uniforms - Prussian/English import.
Constitution - American import.
Traditional 'Japanese' clothing, silk - largely a Chinese import.
Beer - British/German import.
Whiskey - Dutch/Scottish import.

Funny how most things considered unique about Japan...aren't.
