I've never run Office 2000 and 2002 on the same machine...

i would suggest against it. uninstall the japanese version first probably, or learn what all the menus mean and just use it...

Agree with cstaylor - Don't run both on same machine.

Just an idea

If you have MS registered Japanese Office 2002 call MS Japan and ask if you can swap that version to the EIGO version. They did something like that when I swapped Win98. a few years back. Might still do it.

Tip - whine a lot, always helps

Make sure you have disks for Office 2002 before you try anything dangerous. Some notebook makers (Sony  ) put all the software on 2 installation/recovery disks and you may have to re-install XP and everything else on the PC.

What I did when making the gradual switch from Eigo-ban to Nihongo-ban programs was keep the help files from the Engligh version somewhere as a reference.

What I usually do on my PCs is do a HD partition and run a English and Japanese ver. on each. Some of my English software has problems on Japanese OS. If you go this route make sure you have a 3rd partiton to copy files between each OS.

Golly Gee - Fonts.. hhmmm what can I say.. 8O
(stop smirking CS!!! )

I will agree with Steve that investing in some great fonts is worth every penny. Especially as character sets are really limited (OS X has the largest set but gaiji sets are still a necessity if you are doing a heap of work in Japanese). But Osaka font - well it just sucks!! It looks bad and is not a fixed width etc.. best to get a good one.

But in many cases Asian script fonts are a work of art as they are all made by hand... English has only 36 letters to design.. think about the design work that has gone into full character sets.

Manga freaks!! Have you seen this font for specifically making digital Japanese manga..

I just installed Office 11 Beta with Office 2002 (XP) and both work flawlessly. One thing, Outlook was automatically updated to the latest version and I couldn't run two versions of it.. so if you want to use an older version of outlook, I'd suggest not installing two versions of the Office suite.
If you are interested in the beta, contact me via private message.

Since I was the "guest" who started this (too lazy to log in?) I should update:
1. Contacted MSJapan - answer - "should probably" be OK, even they went as far as to say that it "should probably" be OK to install any reputable/well known/bought-in-Japan English soft on J-XP OS. Very definitive answer? -what do you expect? - why bought in Japan?
2. Went ahead and did it. Note: do a custom install and make and put it in a different folder (English Office for eg.) in your program files.
3. Wound up with only English office on desktop and program files menu
4. Went to Program files and dragged appropriate program icons for the Japanes office soft out also (to desktop, wherever) and renamed them as English Word, Japanese Word, etc.

-been working like a charm for two weeks now.

Next. Later my wife figured how to set up different "users" on XP - can do this so different desktop and stuff appears depending on which family member logs in - if you need to know about this I'll have to ask the wife.
Now. when I log in to the comp, in addition to all the other J soft available I get only English office stuff, also when checking express mail get only mine. If I need Japanese office stuff or her mail I log over to her side (this is all on "C" with "D" still available to store data etc.)

NB: Word, for eg. takes 5 or 10 secs to start while it runs a few install bars saying it is preparing and collecting necessary info.

Re: ME: Did the same thing at work two years ago and no probs. In this case, after installing as above, go to start, programs, office tools, language settings... then choose Japanese or English (both written in Kanji). Whichever you choose - thats the language the office program you then start will be in - again takes 5 to 10 secs. I dont know if you can set ME for different users - never tried.

Final note: have older 98 with three partitions and two OS's E and J. This is also great but find myself turning comp on and off a lot to change.

If any more hints from you or you think this system will crash and burn would welcome the input.

Been doing the very same thing for a while now. I even installed a third language, spanish version. Works great. Forgot to tell you about the install bars showing up every time you switch.

Well that certainly appears to fix the problem. Good.

Just to confirm.

1- Is this version running under Eigo Windows?
2. If Eigo windows have you made any REGION changes?

Both of the factors determine if Eigo Outlook can handle Japanese text correctly.

Thanks for this research.

Running Windows XP Professional Eigo version, with SP1. Have installed the East Asian language support when I installed windows XP. I did not install the MUI, Multilingual User Interface, that changes the eigo version into different languages.
Works great with the Eigo version and the East Asian language support.
