My trip to a hostess bar

Postby cstaylor » Sat Jul 06, 2002 7:40 am

Anyone else been to a hostess bar before? It wasn't what I was expecting at all.

I guess Kamome must see that stuff all the time, as he lives in the pink district in Tokyo.

Well, from my limited experience in the U.S...

Postby cstaylor » Sat Jul 06, 2002 8:13 am

Those kind of clubs usually have rooms to separate the guests, or at least turn the lights down so low that it feels like there is a separation... this place reminded me of a McDonald's with couches instead of plastic seats.

Also, in the U.S. the girls usually wear skimpy outfits, but at this place the women were wearing kimonos (I'm not f*cked enough yet to consider that sexy).

The ladies were nice though... one of them spoke decent English, and she's planning to home stay near my hometown, so we spent most of the time going over what she should do when she gets there.

ni man for about two hours and a bunch of alcohol. I did the same in the U.S. in about one hour at one of the nicer clubs (back when I was paid too much money for my coding skills).

The girl asked for my email address... is this common? :?:

No offense taken. This was in Kannai (pink area of Yokohama), not Toyko, so the prices may not be as high... the girls were okay, but not stunning (I see better looking girls working at some of the restaurants near my work)... plus, I'm not a customer, so why would Pops blow big cash on me? ]Email and phone are not unheard of, but a lot of places have "official" policies of not meeting with clients off-duty. Of course, that's a rule that was made to be broken - it's all very nudge, nudge, , , say no more.[/quote]Well, it was strange, since I didn't ask for it (like I'm going to ask for that kind of information in front of Dad ;)), but I guess she just wanted some more information about my hometown.

Here's something that was pretty lame (like I said, I ain't that f*cked yet): after a few drinks they had me do that stupid thing where I try and catch a goldfish with a weak-ass net. Bored out of my head, I did the smart thing and went for the biggest goldfish I saw and immediately broke the net. That has got to be one of the lamest games I've ever played.

Not what you think (maybe)

Postby cstaylor » Sat Jul 06, 2002 9:05 am

Well, the girl caught three of them (I had to squat there like a tool as she patiently [read: ever-so-fucking-slowly] caught them), and we got some sort of prize (this old fashioned soda with a glass ball in it). I think they just put the fish back after we left... boring as hell if you ask me.

That "old fashioned soda" you refer to is probably Ramune. Its a sweet beverage that you often see sold at matsuri and other outdoor public events. I've noticed that Ramune holds some sort of nostalgia for Japanese, probably because they drank alot of it when they were kids. That glass ball is really cool too.

Why the hell were they playing games for Ramune at a hostess bar? No wonder it only cost 2 man at that place.

I think the answer is probably "waste time until closing". Like I said earlier, I thought it was pretty lame.

I'm still not sure what the attraction is to these places... if I wanted to talk to girls dressed in Yukata or Kimonos, I could go hang out during the summer festivals... but then again I noticed that most of the customers were way older than me, so maybe that's their only time to try and recapture their youth?

As for the Ramune (yeah, that's what it was... I kept thinking the girl said "Lemonade" ;)), I wasn't very impressed... reminded me of that Safeway Select 7-up knock-off back in the U.S. :crazy3:

Time's a-wastin'. You're married AND work in IT. Sounds like a formula for hostess bar paradise.

Well, tcpdump didn't work, so you'll have to come up with different goods. :)

By the way, I just saw an anime on TV that showed a couple of kids drinking Ramune while hanging out on a summer day. You could even hear the "clink" of the glass marble in the bottle when they drank it. Pretty cool.

"Windows 98"? There's a Windows 98? I'm still a proud user of Windows '95 on my ancient home laptop. Hey, that comp is nothing more than a rudimentary email and FG.com delivery device, but it has nostalgic appeal, like a vintage Model T Ford. And as long as I have my Playstation, why spend a fortune on a computer that will just serve as another game console?

Anyway, I DO know how to use Win '98 and even a few other applications that run on it as well, thank you very much.

Let me say this: unless you are a serious computer geek, computers do not have "nostalgic appeal". You know how CO2 doesn't have a liquid stage at normal pressure? It goes from dry ice to vapor, right? Computers are the same: they go from "Wow! Cool!!!" to "what a POS... where's the nearest dumpster".

I think "nostalgic appeal" is what kechi people say in self-defense when showing their decrepit POS-1995 laptop to visitors. ;)

Master of the pot calling the kettle black. The true geek in this forum has to be you, cs.

By the way, ultra's museum collection of apples is the bomb. They may be vintage (way more vintage than my mid-90's Dell), but they are pretty damn cool even now. 8-bit porn, however, doesn't really float my boat. :)

Douhan is a charge placed on the customer's bill if they come with the hostess to the club. Usually the customer has taken the hostess out for dinner or some other event that day, and then they go to the club together.

From my limited experience writing software for one club in Yokohama, there are three kinds of charges like this:

douhan = accompany hostess
honshime = chosen hostess. This is how a girl makes the money, because she gets a commission on whatever the customer buys
jonai shime = assigned. When a girl is assigned to a table, there's a charge associated with that as well

Hope that helps.

No, seriously, I wrote a software application that manages hostess bars. Only have one customer at the moment (for some reason, these places don't like highly-accurate reporting... wonder why?).

I still haven't convinced GuyJean that it's worth $100 just to walk in the door. Seriously, its outrageously overpriced. $10 for a glass of oolong tea, $7 just for a pail of ice. The big money starts rolling once you get into the VIP room... that's $100 just to enter, and then you're buying bottles of the pink curvee Dom Peri for $1,000 a bottle.

Fortunately, it's a business expense...
