Yomiuri: Stars over South America shown through Internet
Japanese astronomers unveiled Saturday a Web site that allows viewers to remotely control a camera in the Chilean Andes and gaze at stars that can only be seen from the southern hemisphere. Takehiko Sato, an assistant professor of Kumamoto University, designed and built the camera, which has a field of view large enough to encompass an entire constellation...Anyone wanting to use the camera has to make a reservation via the Web site. At the appointed time, users can remotely control the camera and change its direction using their personal computers. The service is free. Plans are afoot to set up six similar cameras, including ones in Japan and the United States, by the end of March 2007.
