Japanese companies already encourage people to take vacations, but only when there's no work to be done so that it won't upset the company (i.e. never).

Oh, and they're allowed to take vacation when they've completed their contracted hours per week (which are usually astronomical like 160+ hrs per month, meaning that one has to do overtime usually to make up the hours).

Either way, companies here are going to continue to find loopholes to keep salarymen chained to their desks so that shacho can pay off that entire manshon he intends to lease out.

I think the legislation has a a reasonable momentum behind it. The government desires a higher birth rate, lower suicide rate and overall higher domestic consumption. Their policy group studies are all pointing towards better a better work/life balance as one way to achieve that.

In early 2001 (when Ichiro was just starting with the Mariners) a salaryman asked me if it was expensive to fly to Seattle. I said that the price always depends on the timing of the trip. "When do you want to go?" I asked. Without flinching he said, "Within the next 10 years."

Never going to happen

Even if they force people to take the time of, what the hell are they going to do? The kids will still be in school, or cram school. Their wives won't want them around the house, they have no hobbies and little or no imagination. So most will stay at work. It reminds me of the cool biz campaign, and how most of the robots just kept doing the same thing, wearing their suits and ties because they didn't know what else to do.

Being the only FG and my place of supposed employment, I see this work ethic (?). Granted more time is taken off now than several years ago, but the interesting thing is not so much missing work, but missing the office enviornment is the biggest problem that my colleagues have. If they are gone on extended holiday, which may only be three days, they cannot wait to return and find out "what's happening", be it pending personnel moves or "who's who" changes in the pecking order caused by someone getting in trouble of saying something wrong at the right time, or stepping on their schwantz in a kaigi! It's so much the center of their life and their very existance, that taking a vacation and being away from it is more stressful on them then sitting behind a deskfull of paperwork and getting yelled at! When they return, you literally have to give them a play-by-play or every single thing that occurred while they were gone, or they will have a fit!

How are 160 Hours a month astronomical?

8 hours/day * 22 working days/month = 176 hours a month.

Anyway you look at it, 160 hours would be the bare minimum number of hours you would be putting in a regular job, no matter which country you are in.

NP, based on your math, you have never worked for a total J-company! I see people leave at the end of eight hours, but it better be a national emergency. Even then, they will do the rounds of every one in the department bowing and sumimasen'ing each person to death because they are leaving early (early means after eight hours, the scheduled work day on paper).

The only people excused from this are the Pepi's and even they have to stay over frequently.

That's exactly my point. 160 Hours a month would be the bare minimum. People routinly spend like 10 hours a day.In my previous company (American, not japanese) I would see people sometimes sitting around doing absolutely NOTHING, waiting for their boss to leave. In my current company I am the only FG and things are much better, people simply start walking out at 5:30 with a quick osaki-ni.....When required everyone does work late and on weekends (sometimes), but I have not seen anyone being directly or indirectly being forced to work late. Maybe I am just lucky to be here.
