UPI: Japan to reduce public servants
Japan aims to reduce the number of its public servants by 5 percent within five years, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported Thursday. The plan is the outcome of years of debate on administrative reform, the newspaper said, and will be included in a bill to be submitted to the current parliamentary session after its approval by the Cabinet next week. The target will be met by curbing new recruitment, streamlining official procedures and public works and outsourcing to the private sector. The bill will empower the government to reshuffle public employees across the boundaries of ministries and agencies. Local governments are also required to target a 4.8 percent net reduction of their current human resources in the same period...more...
