Gov says NO to personal computers at work

In response to the series of incidents in which classified information has been inadvertently uploaded to the Internet from personal computers running Winny file-sharing software, the government is to prohibit officials from using their own computers for work.

Damn! Just when things were starting to get interesting!

You'd either have to be pretty stupid to put work documents into a shared folder, or you'd have to be willingly wanting to be sharing these documents. My money is on the latter.

None of this will stop inofrmation leaks either. It's still possible to set up your home server and transmit info to it from work. They really can't tell people what to do with their home computers either.

That title would have been more 'journalistically' accurate and I think it fits, but 'leaky lips' was more 'sleezy' better fitting FG I thought.

ANA passwords leaked by virus

Confidential information at All Nippon Airways Co., including passwords to enter restricted areas at 29 airports, was leaked last year through the personal computer of a captain, the airline said Wednesday.

The information spilled onto the Internet after the captain computer, which also contained the Winny file-sharing program, was infected with a virus.

Trend Micro data revealed due to virus
Webwereld | Maandag 3 april 2006, 13:15 -The failure of a Trend Micro Inc. employee to install his company's own antivirus software led to the uploading of some company reports to a popular Japanese peer-to-peer file sharing network, the company said Monday.
About a year ago an employee, who is no longer with Trend Micro, copied data including reports to his boss and proposals regarding the company's products to his home computer, said Kazuhisa Tagaya [cq], a spokesman for the Tokyo company. However the computer was infected through the Winny file sharing application with a virus that caused the files to be released over the file sharing network.
"We didn't say anything at the time because one file has a customer's company name," said Tagaya. "If we did say this then people would have searched for the file and it would have caused trouble for the customer. Now, such accidents happen everyday and the version of the file being distributed on Winny has been rewritten incorrectly by someone so is wrong."...more...

New virus sends bomb warnings, death threats from infected computers

The Yomiuri Shimbun, April 5
A new computer virus has been spreading through the Winny file-sharing program. The virus, which sends malicious false messages from the computers it infects, first appeared last month.
Also, a type of virus capable of striking most computers, regardless of whether they are using Winny software, has led to the contents of people's computers being uploaded to the Internet....more...

Winny And Her

Postby homesweethome » Wed Apr 12, 2006 5:25 pm

The spate of leaks has shed light ....Winny's Infectious Ways

The non-com officer aboard the destroyer Asayuki, for example, copied data inside the ship and fed them into his Winny-enabled home computer. This was a clear violation of work rules. That non-com officer's home computer had already been infected by a virus from a downloaded file, which caused Winny to leak the ship's information.

One irony about Winny is that police officers used computers incorporating the software, causing information leakage, even after the Kyoto prefectural police arrested the Winny designer in April 2004 on suspicion of aiding copyright violations through his invention of the software and his subsequent improvements of it. He says he can redesign Winny to prevent virus-related leakages or to erase leaked files but he will not do so because the act would constitute an improvement of the software, for which he has already been arrested.

Crisscross: Info on crown prince's tour of Osaka leaked on Internet via Winny
Accidental data leak cases involving Winny, a file-sharing software, have increased as an expressway operator admitted Saturday information on tours of dignitaries, including Japan's crown prince and princess, has been leaked onto the Internet. The leaked data files, in the form of internal documents made by a contractor of the Hanshin Expressway Public Corp, showed routes, schedules and other information about the visits to Osaka by Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako. Numerous data leak cases from Winny-installed computers held by officials of private companies and government offices in Japan, including the police and Self-Defense Forces, have been reported.
