The lack of a major sponsor has forced the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) to cancel the Quiksilver Pro World Tour surfing contest in Japan. The event, which was scheduled to take place from August 31 to September 7... on the Chiba coastline, was the seventh stop on the 12-event tour...ASP Chief Executive Officer Brodie Carr said he disliked his organisation having to cancel an event...Last year's Quiksilver final in Japan saw Kelly Slater take on Hawaiian Andy Irons was one of the best ever, with Irons winning in ideal two metre surf in front of a massive crowd...more...

That's pretty wild because the Japanese event has always been popular and you'd think they could find a sponsor. I've been to the contest a few times and had a blast.

Like skiing, surfing in Japan is decline because of the decline of the number of healthy young people in Japan who aren't either glued to their keitai or sleeping in their free time.:-|
