Noisy Neighbours

Postby GomiGirl » Sat Jun 10, 2006 11:52 am

They are demolishing a house next door and it is really loud and they start early every bloody morning. It is not pleasant..

Isn't there something we can do to either get compensation for the lost sleep or get them to start a little later in the day?

Probably not, however, a sniper on the roof would keep them quiet for awhile.

Actually, that is normally only a two, maybe three day job. But then they bring in the construction crew for the new house, or whatever is going to go up there and that is going to take a lot longer. It will also start as early and be as noisy.

I recommend going to the pub earlier.

A little more helpfully, talking to the landowner/site foreman wouldn't be a bad idea. More often than not, if they are building a house they like to keep the peace with their future neighbors so they will often out of their way to accomodate them. I don't think they are under any legal obligation to keep the construction noise down so I doubt you could pursue any legal avenues.

Good Luck

I went totally apeshit screaming at a crew building a 7-11 right in front of my house in Aichi early one Sunday morning. I remember screaming 'FUCK YOUR MOTHERS!' in English and later they came to my apt with some kind of omiage and apologized I just said 'Haiyai nichiyobi asa'.

I agree. If you complain, the company WILL have to bring you an omiyage, no matter what. Happened to us, when they were building a house next door.

The omiyagi is nice, but unfortunately, it will not keep them quiet. It is just a pardon our noise peace offering. The demolition is over quick. Just hope they aren't building Tokyo Tower II in its place.

Thanks for the quick replies.. they have just driven up the skip and are loading up the now demolished house. We wer woken up quite rudely this morning when a wall came down.

Oh well, I will speak to my superintendant and see what she can do. I was hoping that they might offer me an envelope of cash...

Ya want cash? Drop around, but plan on staying for awhile, it takes about a have a day to gloss over the compounding interest table! As well as bit of a demonstration from the fellas as to what happens if ya's to miss a payment!

I got a cheap rent on a house because there were several construction projects planned nearby. One started at 7:00 am on both Saturday and Sunday and was hellishly loud. I dug out some earplugs but I could still feel the vibration. I asked my landlord if that was normal and if it he could find out how long the work was due to go on. A few days later he told me they would start later. Saturday became 9:30 which was still not great but Sunday work stopped. No omiyage but I can't say that worried me. I'm sure I couldn't have been the only neighbour to complain.

Back in the day, when Japan was still having kids, I suppose a lot of families got woken up early anyway and dad caught up on sleep in the train and the office.

Generally, construction cos. are very conscious about neighbors during the period of the work. But just what that means in the end could be a lot of things.

For bigger jobs, construction contracts usually have wording that clearly specifies when the work can be performed, what they will do to limit noise, etc. If this is a small job then such a contract probably doesn't exist. Is this a renovation? Or is a new structure going up?

If the construction is literally within your building I think a visit to the landlord is in order. If the construction is in a completely different building, I think it wouldn't be out of line to talk to foreman directly.

You know, at the company I was at not long ago we had a special yak division, dubbed "urban redevelopment," that handled all issues related to noise, property delineations, etc. that might arise during construction. So not every problem is handled with a simple omiyage.

well the funny thing is that they started working the day after I moved in (it's a brand new building going up). Lately, noisewise, it hasn't been too bad, but I still remember waking up to an incredibly loud banging noise really early in the morning (like 10am) in the beginning. They have a long way to go so it will probably flare up again sometime. The good thing is that this noise sometimes covers up the noise coming from the nearby expressway (wait - I'm not sure that is a good thing actually).

On a sidenote, why is channel 12 showing the ladies double finals (?) instead of the live action @ the mens finals?

It is the house next door that is being pulled down. Our balcony (ground floor) faces it directly and is about 20m away from all the action. They did put up scaffolding and canvas sheeting to shield the view, however it does nothing for the noise that started at some ungodly hour again this morning. They are just using a bulldozer and back-hoe to rip through the house and dump all the remains in a skip. Our apartment shakes when each wall comes down.

I guess I could just get up earlier but we all work engineers hours around our place.... ie we don't get to bed until the small hours of the morning...

Shouldn't that read "until time is called in the pub"?
