[floatl]Image[/floatl]Yomiuri: Irish pubs the best
...The thirst for Irish pubs seems almost unquenchable. According to Takashi Toyama, a representative of Enterprise Ireland, about 70 Irish pubs now dot the country, 40 of which opened in the past five years. This equates to about one pub per 25 Irish people registered with the embassy here...Taro Maeda, president of New Tokyo Restaurant Co., which operates Duffy's in Ginza, Tokyo, said the expansion of Irish pubs is a trend indicative of changing lifestyles. "Many people don't want to stand on formality anymore when they go out, but they want to do something trendy," Maeda said. "Irish pubs, with their casual, friendly atmosphere, fit the bill nicely"...But an Irish pub would not be an Irish pub without Guinness, and Japan's taste for the stout has been growing since Sapporo Breweries Ltd. began importing and selling it in 1964. These pubs in this country have turbocharged the demand for Guinness and Kilkenny, with sales of the brews at Irish pubs here showing the highest growth in Asia, according to Toyama..."Just having a place for customers to stand and serving Guinness doesn't make an Irish pub," said Hiroko Ueno..."The beauty of an Irish pub is the staff's closeness with the customers...they are more like friends. It shouldn't just be a restaurant you go to eat and drink--it has more of a family feel, where you go to meet people"...more...

This does seem a bit inadequate doesn't? They maybe should try to get that number down to a more realistic figure of two pubs per Irishman, or woman!

Hey, no "trouble." The jazz pub run by family-Taro, the Katacomb (nee' jazz Bulls) has been on North Lincoln for 45 years.

On the note of festivals, is there usually some sort of St Pats Day party or large drinking event which one may attend if one feels the need to have a different reason for drinking that particular day?

I don't know about Japan, but at every Irish pub I've been to here in the US, there are regularly scheduled major drinking events, they are held on every day that ends in a "y."

And now for my favorite gratuitous Irish joke, I heard this many years ago on an Irish comedy show on shortwave radio.

Q: What's an Irish Homosexual?
A: An Irishman who prefers women over drinking.

I usually have a couple of pints of Kilkenny after our Japanese class on a Wednesday night - beautiful stuff. There's no shortage of Irish pubs here in Sydney, either.

I loved that in my town (Utsunomiya = boonies) that the one and only gaijin pub was an Irish themed one - The Lions Head.

The owner had never been abroad, never mind Ireland... Talk about make it up as you go along.

Nice fish and chips, though.

Being of distant Irish descent (so distant that it isn't worth mentioning until you want St. Patricks Day off of work to get drunk) and knowing a lot of Irish people, I must say that short of the South Australian's they are a big drinking bunch.. Adelaide might be the City of Curches, but it has 3 pubs to every church.. Ooh, St. Patty's day is soon, I'd better get my liver back in training..

Kinda off topic. The other night when I was eating at me parents house,
I referred to the fries my mom made as "chips".

I said, "Dad, you want any more of these chips?" He didn't even bat an eye and said, "No, I'm done."

Then I realized I had said chips instead of fries and he didn't ask me what I meant as he usually did when I mixed up british english with american english.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

no that off topic, (like anywhere other than N.America) we say 'chips' in Ireland too: I guess colonisation has its benefits
..at least you didnt call them 'furaidopoteito' ;)
I wonder if the 'potato chip' companies had something to do with their modern nomenclature in the US & Canada?

Ireland V England in one of the last 6 Nations Rugby matches on Sat afternoon here.
Anyone in Tokyo might be in a position to catch the first half before you pass out on a couch in Paddy Foleys Roppongi round about 6am on Saturday morning. :)

Reuters: Japan's Ireland fans turn green for St. Patrick
...Although most Japanese know little about Ireland -- some even confuse it with chilly Iceland -- the small European nation has attracted a band of die-hard fans halfway around the globe. "Ireland is my life. I know it sounds odd, like I am some sort of Ireland maniac," said Tokyo resident Kimie Nagahama, founder of the Japan Irish Dancing Association. A longtime student of Irish culture, Nagahama teaches traditional step dancing and plays Celtic music alongside her husband in an all-Japanese band. When she has time, the 34-year-old office temp even bakes her own Irish soda bread. Charmed by Ireland's hospitality and fascinated by its vibrant culture, Nagahama and others have embraced the country with a particularly Japanese zeal. "I've been to Ireland once for sightseeing. Although it is impossible now, I would like to live there at some point," said Toru Toyama, a 38-year-old assistant museum curator whose interest in the country began with its national soccer team. "I like Irish music and Guinness beer and the Irish fighting spirit"... "Somehow, I felt comfortable in Ireland," said 38-year-old Kishi, who plays the traditional sport of Gaelic football and dreams of painting Ireland's scenic West. "Ireland is an island surrounded by the sea. In that sense maybe it's similar to Japan -- although Irish people don't eat as much fish"...more...

This is bringing back memories of an Irish pub hidden downstairs somewhere in Shinjuku, the barman actually being Irish (ex-eikaiwa teacher too!). Had some amazingly great times there.

Irish pubs are big in Canberra (Australia) too. Strangely, at one stage there were none, when someone started up a tiny one including with it their home-brewed beer and regular band nights. The beer was gold-medal stuff too. Suddenly a number of huge Irish pubs exploded onto the scene.

This St. Patrick's Day, Tokyo Tower will be lit up in green to commemorate 50 years of relation between Japan and Eire.

It seems Tokyo, Kyoto, Nagoya, Kumamoto, Yokohama, Ise, Sendai and Shimane have all registered for official parades this year.

Kind of a surprise to not see Sapporo on that list, as Sapporo Beer is the Guiness pardner and door to Japan!

In honor of the 50th, the Ambassador is holding this year's St. Paddies Party at a major hotel vice the usual open house for the Irish community at his residence. Emperor probably remembers a few of those (on the second thought, doesn't remember), as they usually move to standing room only outside at Paddy Foley's, later in the evening (morning)!

He has a nice pad there in Azabu-Juban... I think I might fancy becoming an ambassador.
