What are you trying to insuate bird? That I'm also a cranky SOB? Well, now that you mention it, maybe he could be a younger brother.

But, you better watch out, because it looks like he's put in his time as a GU-11 shipboard systems tender!

Postby (1VB)freels » Fri Jul 07, 2006 1:16 am

Howdy. I am Jim Freels. I was first brought to Japan by way of being stationed on the USS Independence and then the USS Kitty Hawk. I have a great Japanese wife and two wonderful kids. I am still in the Navy and was hopeing to get the chance to be reassigned back over but as luck may have it, I can't. Anyway I am glad to see so many people have a common interest in Japan that I have. I love being over there. I miss it so much. As of right now, my wife and kids are there now on vacation and I am stuck here going to work and missing all the fun and things to do there over the summer. Anyway I will not go on too much longer. I just would like to say thank you for letting me get the chance to say hello and I am glad to be welcomed to this great community of people.

Welcome Sailor.

My dad was in the Navy and was stationed in Yokosuka for a number of months back in the late 50's. He was on the USS Shangri-La, which was the first angle deck carrier in the fleet. My dad has some great stories, and some photos have still survived from that time. I did not know until quite recently that he could speak rudimentary Japanese and had a serious girlfiriend over there. Apparently, a lot of Tokyo was "off limits" to the boys, but my dad and his sidekick often strayed off the beaten track.

Thank God he came home and knocked up his next door neighbor, or else I wouldn't even be here. ;)

My Old Man was a journalist on board the ship. What do you do in the Navy?

What ya think Cranky? You didn't have airdales on merchantmen, so should we rate him as a snipe?

Back long ago on a Monrovian reg bucket hauling grain to Viet Nam I was in a pickle a few knots south of Saigon.
Scavange fire in the engine room, forced to anchor out of convoy.
Getting shot at from shore. I'm screaming into the vh CH16 for the port authorities to send a tug.
An American 'boat' appears, stands between us and shore taking and giving fire until we finally weigh anchor and proceed up river.
If (1VB)freels is a part of that organisation I'll rate him a King snipe.

I don't know how to respond but if you are saying that you appreciated that the Navy saved your ship, then yeah. But if not, then, huh? What? I don't know.

As for the ship I suspect the owners were hoping it would never reach deep sea again. It was insured but the cargo wasn't.

Is old Japanese remedy for beating summer heat:

is going to sento, and after removing clothes, is jumping straight into the Cold Water Bath (in Japanese speak, Mizu buro)

If Sento is not available, one is buying Ice Cone (in Japanese speak, Kaki Goori), and dumping on head. If buying Ice Cone dripping in noxious chemical flavour syrup (in Japanese speak, Oishii ajitsuke), is needing to go to sento to wash off sticky stuff dripped down collar of shirt. Is washing off it before getting into Cold Water Bath (in Japanese speak, Mizu buro).

Hi Shane. Nice flag! That would certainly get your ass kicked at places like China or Korea that are super sensitive about WWII
