Musicals in Tokyo

Tokyo being such a big city it has to have many cultural events other than Kabuki which I don't like. Is there a Japanese musical or musicals that are playing in Tokyo? I don't want the Japanese remakes of Mamma Mia or Les Miz but something original in Japanese. I'd like to take the "missus" to a play in Tokyo if I can.

Takarazuka would be the obvious choice if you want a musical written in Japan. In Tokyo, the show "Rome at Dawn" is running in the Tokyo theatre until the end of August. Most everything else is just West Side Story, Cats etc.

If you want something light then look again at the kabuki scedule. The afternoon schedule often features a comedy which will be long on visual humour and will be a better experience than a second rate musical.

There is usually a lot of good dance on in Japan. You can often see companies in Tokyo that can rarely afford to tour extensively elsewhere. And there should be some good music events too.

Rome at Dawn sounds great. This is exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. We have many "opera-rock" in Montreal in French and I liked them a lot.

Art-It lists a few alternative off-broadway productions and there is Maya Denki too. the girls pictures above are some type of performance troupe. There website is here. Kathy was an Art-It pick becuase, "Beware: theater wereby the audience unknowingly becomes part of the act leaves no room for idle viewing!" Sounds interesting... and they all wear gas masks.

You should be OK getting Takarazuka tickets. Even if they are sold out at source on a date you want then they are often available at a premium in the ticket shops in Shimbashi or Shinjuku. It can be cheesy sometimes but you won't often see such a show outside Japan and that's half the fun.

If you read Japanese then http://www.pia.co.jp/ is a very comprehensive listings site. If you have a Japan-registered credit card then you can buy tickets but I usually just use it as a guide to what's on.
