Hey, maybe those idlers are purifying their own air...

Nissan, Sharp develop car air conditioner-purifier
Yomiuri Shimbun july 2, 2003

Nissan Motor Co. and Sharp Corp. have jointly developed a new car air conditioner with an air purifying function, the first created by an automobile maker and electric appliance manufacturer.

By combining cutting-edge technologies, the two companies have succeeded in producing the first ever car air conditioner capable of purifying air by electrolyzing airborne moisture into positive and negative ions, officials of the two companies said Monday.

Polluted Hong Kong mulls laws on idling engines
AFP, Jul 25 3:01 AM US/Eastern
Hong Kong motorists may face fines for leaving their engines idling under legislation being considered to help reduce the city's worsening pollution problem, the government said....
Environment Secretary Sarah Liao said officials would make a decision on introducing legislation after they had studied the effectiveness of a voluntary appeal urging drivers to turn off their engines while stationary.
"We are investigating the effect of stopping idling car engines," Liao told reporters. "Of course we need to go through a very extensive consultation process before we embark on anything." ...more..

I find it hilarious that this thread claims the Japanese have no common sense, for doing what is perfectly common and makes total sense, to them. Common sense is subjective to the culture one is talking about right?

Yes, I find idling one's engine for hours stupid by my native California standards. But it's just the way things are...in Asia.

Yes. There's much love to be had for the redneck without car insurance that drives all winter on bald tires with the cords showing and then tries to convince you that he will pay for the car repairs that are north $20k that he caused, just so you won't report the wreck and make him go to jail. Oo? $10 an hour will take how long to pay off my fender? Hello?

There's also a lot of love for people that can't drive all that well on bare cement, much less be arsed to fathom basic vehicular control when snow flakes are out and dancing like drunken fucks on cement.

Each type loudly exclaims that it is your fault until they hear your cell autodial 911.

Oh! But but but! Oh, but! But but! Here's my number, call..

Nah.

wow three years on I thought this thread was dead.

" Common sense is subjective to the culture one is talking about right?"

No I dont think so...in this world global warming and pollution effect us all..."culture" is a BS excuse. its not a cultural thing to leave an engine on...its a habit.

There have been many "cultural" points made in this thread to explain this practice. Salarymen not being wanted at home, the fact that parking tickets are not handed out to running cars, and so on. The Japanese contribute to global warming in some ways (e.g. idling cars) but are much better in some other ways (e.g. most people use electric mass transit, bicycle or walk). On balance, they are causing less damage than American's culture/habits, that's for sure. So while I think idling cars is stupid, and damaging, I'm not going to get all Debito about it.

If that's the way they want to live, it'd be fine with me. Let them fight amongst themselves all they want.

Prof. Karl T. Ulrich of the Wharton School of Business has recently been espousing the theory that bicycle riding is worse for the environment than cars.

http://news.mongabay.com/2006/0722-bikes.html]
the environmental benefits of human power are, however, strongly coupled to the environmental costs of increased population, due to increased longevity of those who engage in physical activity... Human-powered transportation is therefore less an environmental issue and more an issue of public health.

The gist of his work is that riding bicycles keeps people alive longer. People who are alive (bike riders) use more energy than people who are dead. In fact, they eventually use a lot more energy than they saved by biking instead of driving.

So by extension, if those salarymen idling their cars were simply to smoke a few cigarettes each time, they'd be helping the environment tremendously by expediting their own death.

No doubt the Wharton School of Bizznez is a reputable institution, but ...
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

the problem with that image is the obesity levels have been risen inversely!!

back to the old age logic, perhaps "idylers" should just blow their fucking brains out and really help the environment! after they turn the engine off!
LOL
