I dunno, if not gramps' generation, then a generation or two up the line, he would've thought it perfectly normal to sell her off to some Edo flesh merchant in return for some farm equipment.

that's just sad. one thing's for sure, society & humanity have failed this young lady. i think the most striking line to me was "She was lucky. No one mistreated her; no one offered help, either." sad
