Postby skroog » Sat Aug 19, 2006 12:59 am

Hey to all the FGs, cant believe I spent 2 years of my life here and never stumbled upon FG before. Im going for 1kyu in December and thought I wud share what ive been using as semi-study when pissing round on the net. Im also working on making an internet explorer toolbar with C for the first link. Anybody with experience with this sort of thing send me a pm and maybe you can offer me some shortcuts or forewarnings.

http://www.speedanki.com/ my halfassed attempt at study at present

Two of the most wicked sites I know.

Live it up.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Thanks for that site, i never knew about it. I always used to use Jisyo, but I guess thats kind of cheating seeing as the english translation screams out at you.

Yay :-)

That is one kick-ass site!

This might be the most useful first-post ever seen on FG.

Thanks very much for the links.

[quote="Charles"]Honestly now, do people really use jukugo like 扇]
Yes, all the time.

ファン is used for things such as computer fans or for a bathroom exhaust fan, but 扇風機 is used for floor-standing fans that everyone here has several of to move air around in the summer.

That is brilliant! Thanks! Someone already said it, but that has to be one of the most useful things I've seen posted.

these sites are outdated IMO. download firefox and install the rikaichan plugin. you can read at your own level and if you don't know a word or kanji reading all you have to do is mouse over it.

I've tried rikaichan and it can be useful but overall I find it annoying. A site like hiragana.jp is much more useful to me.

Wow the hirgana one is a killer. I also really like speedanki, simple and to the point.
I use rikaichan a lot but sometimes it's hard to keep up with the flow of the text with it. You keep looking at words individually and it's easy to loose the meaning of the whole sentence.
By the way is there a rikaichan like software that would work within the OS rather than browser-only ?

Here's another Firefox plug-in. Haven't tried it yet.

Moji

I used Moji before I switched over to rikaichan a few years ago. Was nice in concept but was very buggy (at least in my installation). It used to get "stuck" all the time, and would stop functioning mid-session. Maybe it's better now. Anyway, I've got used to the popup style of rikaichan - not at all annoying if you remember the keyboard shortcuts for turning it on/off.

I never knew about these sites. I need to get out of my cave more often. Or I should have gotten my cave's computer on line a long time ago.
