Maybe the rockets were past their "use by" date and, rather than throwing them out, he was just shooting them off - much more fun.

Japanese paper: defense officials believe Korean rocket was headed for Hawaii

The long-range missile North Korea fired this week was reportedly aimed at an area near Hawaii.

A conservative paper in Japan reports U.S. and Japanese defense officials studied the missile's path and concluded it was aimed at the South Pacific. The long-range missile fizzled and plunged into the Sea of Japan shortly after taking off . . . more

Don't believe it.

It's just the Hawaiians showboating again.

I believe the real rift is between North Korea and Samoa.

There's been long running tensions between the two countries since a Samoan War Canoe was allegedly sunk by a North Korean submarine . . .

and a Samoan sumo wrestler responded by eating an entire North Korean village.

Don't believe it.

I don't either. They can't even get it over to the much closer Nippon. Hitting Hawaii is like making the full court shot at the buzzer, especially with their backwards technology.

The distance between nth Korea and Hawaii is 7k km.. but the max missile range is 6.5k.

That is the literal translation. It is actually "type of short penis"!

Rocket aimed at Hawaii??

I read on CNN that basically they didn't have any control over it once it was launched. Kind of an interesting pattern of where all the rockets landed though.

I don't think the US military would give out information on what the possible target was, even if they knew. The Japanese military don't have any capability in this at all (the USA informed them in '98 that NK had just fired a missile overhead).
I think all the launch detection and tracking info is highly classified. Of course, they could also give false info to throw off NK, China, Iran, etc.

My opinion? They all seem to be headed towards the Air Force base in Misawa. US and Japanese F-15's up there. Lotta damage if it hits, but it won't. PAC-3's are up there now!

They wouldn't try and target Misawa or any other place in Japan as that would be an act of war. They maybe crazy but they aren't stupid.:karma2:

If they were going to target Japan or a US base there would have been a lot of troop movements and preparations on the NK side of the DMZ.

I think the pattern were they landed is more than a coincidence (assuming the actual splash down areas shown on the news are correct). Far enough from Japan that they weren't threatening but close to make a statement. If they were as close to Japan as they were to Russia I think the world wide response would be different.

I think they calculated the target range perfectly. Note the lack of anger from Russia and the reluctance to UN sanctions.

I am not sure why they fired off so many old SCUDS though. Maybe for effect. That is an old and proven missile that doesn't need testing unless there was some major modification done to them. Maybe, as someone mentioned in this thread they were just clearing out old stock.

USS Mustin Rolls into Yokosuka

Postby mr. sparkle » Sun Jul 09, 2006 3:46 am

US deploys missle destroyer to Japan. They say it's been in the planning for awhile and has nothing to do with the NOKO missle tests.

In August, Yokosuka will also welcome the USS Shiloh, which last month demonstrated its ability to shoot down missile warheads in a landmark test off the coast of Hawaii.

Both the Mustin and the Shiloh are equipped with radar systems that employ so-called Aegis technology, which is geared toward tracking and shooting down enemy missiles.

The system was instrumental in identifying and assessing Wednesday's missile launchings, which all fell apparently harmlessly into the Sea of Japan.

The U.S. Navy now has eight Aegis-equipped vessels at Yokosuka.

New NKorea missile bases target US military in Japan: report
SEOUL (AFP) -Thu, Aug 3, 2006
North Korea has been building new underground missile bases along its east coast, targeting Japan and US military facilities in Japan, a report said.
Some 200 Rodong missiles with a range of up to 2,200 kilometers (1,360 miles) and 50 SSN-6 missiles with ranges of 2,500 to 4,000 kilometers are at the new bases, the state-run Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) said ....

South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon has warned North Korea that a nuclear test would pose a serious international threat.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/5277228.stm
But Mr Ban said that while officials were keeping a close watch on the North's activities, a nuclear test was viewed only as a possibility.

North Korea has lashed out after the start of joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises, saying they nullified the armistice in the 1950-53 Korean War and warning that it may take retaliatory action.
http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/08/22/korea.wargames.ap/
Such criticism from the North was not new, but it came amid renewed concerns the communist nation may be planning to test a nuclear weapon following provocative missile launches last month that drew U.N. Security Council sanctions.

US and Korea have been doing military exircises for years, haven't attacked, yet N. Korea always drags out the same tired lines.

Seems that I do recall hearing something like that! But, isn't that the nature of business? No matter what type of noteriety it might be, if you get your name in lights, you can always get a job with someone who wants to capitalize on it!

A North Korean official said his country will soon unload fuel rods from a nuclear reactor to make plutonium for weapons, seeking to pressure Washington into direct talks, a visiting U.S. scholar said Saturday.

Selig Harrison, just back from a visit to North Korea, told a Beijing news conference he had held talks with Kim Kye-gwan, Pyongyang's top negotiator at stalled six-party talks on its nuclear weapons ambitions.

The nuclear weapon that North Korea intends to detonate in an underground test is big enough to kill up to 200,000 people were it ever to be used against a city such as Seoul or Tokyo, Russian military experts have revealed in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.

http://www.mosnews.com/news/2006/10/08/200people.shtml
Image

The weapon, with the same 20-kiloton yield as the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, is about 10ft long and weighs four tons, the experts were quoted as saying. It is too big to fit on to any missile Kim Jong Il’s regime currently possesses but if it were detonated above ground it could destroy everything within five square miles.
