Dangers of Yahoo Images

Damn those people. I was teaching a first grade junior high school girl and we were talking about famous people. THe text book cited Marilyn Monroe, but my student wasn't sure who she was. So we headed over to my computer and I typed in Marilyn Monroe and then clicked on images. Now of course I got some images of Marilyn MOnroe, especially the famous one of her with her skirt being blown up, from the movie "the Seven Year Itch" I think. No problem. But there are also a bunch of pictures oh her that have been photo shopped and put on the bodies of porn stars. Thus forcing Canman-sensei to very quickly turn off the monitor. But this is not the first time this has happened to me. I often use the internet for pictures etc with students, especially images, but you would be surprised how many strange pictures come up when you type in something as innocent as "Abraham Lincoln having sex with George Bush". No I'm joking, but I guess I'll have to be more careful about when to use the internet for images.

To state the obvious (sorry), for school use Google's "SafeSearch Filtering" (use "strict filtering" to filter both explicit text and explicit images) which reduces the number of porn pix. Also select the option for Google's default (10 results) to reduce the total number of lower ranked (possible porn) pictures.

Google's SafeSearch blocks web pages containing explicit sexual content from appearing in search results.

I didn't know that Google had such a filtering selection. I wonder though does it filter out all the porn etc. Also will it inadvertently filter out some of the pictures that I'm searching for.

I used the Google filter at work--it gets 90% of the porn. With the default option of 10 results only, there was no hardcore in the first 15 sets of ten thumbnails (click to review the filtered results).

Result 46th of 100 was small, tasteful, and classic.


Result 58th of 100 was full-sized but still tasteful and a copy of a classic.


As a former BIA teacher and library book-selection committee member, I would strongly defend the value of both photos for any age group in context.

YIKES! Yahoo Image is rather racy for the first hit on Marilyn Monroe. I cannot find the filter option or the Yahoo profile change needed.

You see what I mean. I'll tell you, my fingers were flying to click on any image that was not pornographic. Luckily the student, didn't seem to notice anything. Then again this is Japan, where you get porn in your daily newspapers and gossip magazines. But I don't want a student going home telling her Mom," hey Mom guess what we did today in English class? Surfed for porn".
I also know that this girl often tells her Mom what we did in each class, so it could come up.

Most likely it does, but I couldn't find it because Yahoo search has hidden the feature somewhere. I dug around in Yahoo "Help" and in my profile options but I gave up after a few minutes.
