Working overtime and not being paid for it is ok
8000 RMB ($1000) a month is not so bad
You consider buying a car

I was waiting for that dude to smear him. As nice a guy as I can be, I won't permit anyone to speak to me to my face in such a manner.

It just isn't done.

One time I was in Nanjing at a large hotel bar. I paid for my drinks with ichi-man, having just arrived. The guy next to me had a shit fit and took a swipe at me. I ended up decking him in front of most the bar guests. After he came to, he came up and demanded I buy him a beer to 'save face'. What the hell, so I did. From that point on we were drinking buddies. Met him again several times and he had a good run with his mates about the lao wei that knocked him out!

Lessons learned -

1) Chinese use anger to release and 'level' their circumstance. Much the same way Japanese use denial and internalization.

2) Sometimes you gotta clock someone to shut them up. Just be prepared to buy a drink for them afterwards. Or better yet, buy the drink, sit it on the bar and tell them this will be waiting for them in about an hour.

Uncle Bus was clearly f*d up in more ways then one. Which is why the younger guy wasn't really pushing it. He was trying to show some respect to the old coot. If not anything else, just because he was older. Hell, its China, who knows, that old coot could have turned out to be a minor party official and have your ass quicker than a case of the Shanghai runs in a reform camp outside of Harbin.

I'm surprised this one hasn't found its way into the forums yet:

Apparently this is what water in your average Chinese lake looks like. Each bottle is a different lake, stream or river.

I don't think she means quite the same body parts as you Greji. ;)

I met this weird guy on the island last summer who James and I call the chicken-fucker now... After a few beers too many he started going on about how chicken body temp is "just right" and how the egg shoot (no idea wtf that is called) is, uh, a "good fit". 8O

Lurk, I was in basic training for the military with a "good ole boy" from the home town farm area that actually used to swear by chicken poking. I never saw him after that. They probably assigned him to courier pigeons.....

You've been in China too long when....

The China Telecom guy shows up to "hook-up" your internet and you tell him where to drill a hole through your concrete wall so that the cable can pass through.....

And then he leaves the hole as is, and you break out the putty to fix the hole, and think nothing of it.

Plus, you have your own RJ45/CAT5 crimper for the two copper cables he handed you without the plastic terminal connection. So you can save 15kuai by DIY.

Never thought about that. I suppose it would depend on the egg load....

Is China that bad?

It looks like Japan doesn't want my homeland higher ed experience or variety of jobs in Japan experience. I never worked for a chain school or sang the A B C song to kiddies. I'm really desperate not to go back to where I was last time. Is China a viable option for somebody who is older, is experienced in curriculum preparation, has worked at senmon gakko and one of the biggest name companies in Japan teaching English?

I suppose the no MA, Phd thing is going to fuck up my chances in China as well. :(

You could probably buy a MA and PHD in China....but I still wouldn't want to work there. Try Korea or Taiwan?
