Cool Free Japanese Screen Savers for OS X

Postby mr. sparkle » Fri Jan 19, 2007 12:53 pm

[floatr]Image[/floatr]

There are a few cool screen savers to download in the "Project" column of this guy's site. "Gadget", "Odyssey" and "Bossa" are the downloads for screen savers. See if you like. These are for Mac OS X Tiger only.

Here's a comp for "Soviet Supreme".

Looks like Zugakousaku the mac daddy of Quartz Composer. Very cool looking stuff. Warning: You can get lost on his site.

I would guess that the upcoming version of FC Studio will have more access to the coolness of QC. Who knows when that will happen or what they will do.

All I know is that Apple bought a good chunk of real estate for NAB over last year.

Gonna be a big year for Apple indeed.

Quality control?
Can't be right, but NAB is the trade show they have every year at Vegas for professional tv and broadcasting equipment. National Association of Broadcasters or something like that.

Quartz Composer for QC?

The National Association of Broadcasters Conference would be my guess too for NAB.

Trying to work out what the hell people are rattling on about is a fun occasional FG pastime.

Sorry guys, yes, you are all so smart.

NAB is the Nat'l Assoc. of Broadcasters convention. It's held yearly in Vegas around tax time. It is the largest convention in the U.S. surpassing CES (consumer electronics) show.

QC is Quartz Composer, a core application for OS X which harnesses "Core Video" and the power of a video card's GPU for displaying graphics in OS X.

You guys didn't say...you like the screensavers? I think they're really cool.

I couldn't find the screensaver that made the Constructivism thing, where is it?

I liked the look of the Hotel Gadget but I can't imagine using it as a real screensaver. My Quad G5 burns so much power and kicks out so much heat, I want something that doesn't burn any extra cycles. Using QC to shift the load off the CPUs onto the video card won't help, the fan on my Quadro FX 4500 is noisier than the CPU fans.

My current favorite: Blank Screen Saver

AFAIK LCD screens don't need saving...?

I used to leave the RSS screensaver with headlines from Reuters/BBC/NewYorkTimes running... but now I have my imac and ibook set to power down the screen after 10mins and then shutdown after 20mins.

Those scrn-svrs look pretty none-the-less.

Actually, they do. The bulb will eventually burn out, but screensavers generally don't turn off the bulb, MacOS X turns the bulb off via a system setting.
There is some controversy as to whether you also need to blank the LCD itself. Some people claim that the LCD pixels will burn in over time, some say they don't. Some people claim it's better to rotate colors rather than just turn it black. My personal choice is turn the screen black on a 5 min inactivity, then turn off the bulb after 10 min. I'm taking no chances with my 30" Cinema Display.

You guys are all correct. If you ever look at the black part of the screensaver, you can still see the backlight leeking through because it is not completely turned off. The black part is actually just pixels blocking the light and so you are technically still burning the backlight.

My favorite screensaver is the OFF button. ;)

It's not a screen saver. It's just a QC Comp.

Odyssey of Boys and Girls is really cool. That's what I'm using.
