A new "Fitness Convenience Store" opens today in Shibuya, Tokyo. Fast First charges customers 500 yen ("one coin") for 10 minutes on one of their 30 walking machines. The idea for the new-style gym originated in Shinsaibashi, Osaka where shoppers come during the day and workers stop by on their way home at night. If the Shibuya store proves a hit, the company has provisional plans for sites in Shinjuku and Ikebukuro near the stations.

How do these machines work? There is no treadmill - you just stand on them and then what????

I was thinking the same thing. If you really want to take a walk after work just get off one stop before your normal station.

Also, I was thinking that in any case, 10 minutes of walking really isn't much of a workout. You need to do it at least 30 minutes to get a good cardio workout - which means your 500 yen is pretty much down the drain. Pay 3000 yen and you'll work up a good sweat. But a basic monthly gym membership in TK costs around 10,000 yen. So if you go more than 3 times, you've already paid the equivalent of a full month at a real gym. What's the point?
