Japan Needs More Humanists

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Feb 14, 2007 9:37 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Asahi: Success rate for doctorates in humanities "too low"
The success rate of graduate students studying for doctorates in the humanities is less than a third of that in natural sciences, a government survey showed. "It is a little low," said an education ministry official about the humanities rate. "We want each graduate school to think about how high the rate should be"... For graduate students in natural sciences, it is understood that they will receive their doctorates once they show the ability to conduct their own research. But in the field of humanities, doctoral degrees are generally given out only to those who have achieved "academic distinction and earned a reputation." This requirement dates back about 120 years when the doctoral system was set up in Japan...more...

The proposed solution seems to involve lowering standards.

As a forever-pending Phd in the humanities (linguistics), I seriously doubt Japan's deficit in doctorates in humanities is a loss. Of the dozens of Hitachi papers from Japanese doctorates in humanities I have refereed, not one was worthy of publication (until Hitachi made a donation).:-|

That award long ago went to Taro. I still post stories and links only to realize that he found them four or five years before when it was much harder to dig them out.
