Rescue workers have found the bodies of three men who had been missing since Sunday's avalanche on Mt Shakotan in Hokkaido - bringing the death toll to four.

The four victims were all from Hokkaido - Masahiro Watanabe, 44, Hiroshi Oyane, 59, Osamu Uchida, 34, and Yukiya Yamagiwa, 20.

They were among 22 male snowmobilers who drove up the mountain on 17 snowmobiles to record their trip with camcorders, according to the police.

The rescue workers had resumed the search for the missing three near the top of the mountain on Monday morning, with help from about 50 members of the Ground Self-Defence Force.

The rescue team also found about five snowmobiles in the area of the avalanche, the police said.

The avalanche occurred on Sunday afternoon at about 1,000 metres above sea level on the 1,255-metre mountain on the Shakotan Peninsula in the western part of Hokkaido.

The snowmobilers had broken into two groups, and the avalanche occurred near the upper group, engulfing about 10 snowmobiles and some of those who were in the lower group, the police said . . . more

Kuro, that should not surprise you that they could not have been forewarned. The article says ".....No avalanche warning had been issued by the Hokkaido Local Meteorological Observatory for the area, which saw flurries of snow at the time of the accident, the observatory said....."

When all Meteorological agencies in Japan are tied up trying to predict important events, like the unique sakura blooms, they cannot be troubled with nitnoy shit like avalanches.

Just when I thought there could be nothing humourous said in this thread, you made me chuckle.

Nice one, G-man.

Watch out for the sakura no nadare.

It's 'Hideout', and I only write messages there; I can't read.

Roughly translated, 'nitnoy chinchined farang' should mean 'little-dicked gaijin'.. Or, 'needle-dick white boy'.. Of course, it's a stew of 3 language I can hardly understand: Thai, Japanese, and English. ;)

Speak for yourself there GJ. Just remember the old saw about when the Lone Ranger and Tonto were surrounded by the renegade band of indians bent and the Lone Ranger said "What do we do now, Tonto?" Tonto, who had begun putting on war paint, simply replied "What do you mean we, white man"?
