Selling an original Monet

Postby Bucky » Thu Apr 26, 2007 2:25 am

I have been contacted by an art collector in California who has -- what he claims to be -- an original Claude Monet painting.

This fellow wants to try to sell his painting in Japan, I think he feels he can get a better price on it in Japan.

Does anyone have any contacts in Tokyo that I might contact to discuss how to go about exploring the idea of putting this painting for sale in Japan?

The collector says he does not want to deal with Christies or any other of the famous US or UK auction houses for some reason.

The painting is in Southern California now.

This painting is unlikely to fetch a higher price in Japan, the money just isn't there. It really takes a Christie's or Sotheby's to get a painting like this before a mass of interested buyers worldwide. And it takes a major auction house to authenticate a Monet and represent it as genuine, if you really want the big bucks.

I'll tell you a relevant story. A friend of mine married a woman from an old European family, she owned a Monet about the same size as yours, maybe a bit better quality. They got divorced, she got to keep the Monet. She sold it a couple of years ago at Sotheby's NY and got $5.7 Million. Note that the buyer pays the auction commission.

I'm no art collector, but I can't think of any legitimate reason he would not want to deal with a famous auction house. I can however think of a large number of shady reasons why he would not want to do so...

That panting is void of any qualities of Monet.
Look at the color of the sky and how the reds blare at you like a hot rodder going down the street.

It's a fake for sure....Even the direction of the light is wrong.
THAT & only THAT is why he is trying to sell it somewhere he thinks there are a lot of suckers.

G-girl offered too much for it..Way too much:cool:

You have to get one of those daylight flourescents for the Chinese guy in the cellar. You probably have a soft glow so all his paint mix looks off when you get it out into the sunlight.

I have since consuted with a Monet authority at the University of Massachusetts who has also indicated that he is quite dubious of the authenticity of the painting.

I have suggested to the owner that he have it independently authenticated so that there would be no question. We'll see how eager he is to prove it is the genuine article.

Stay tuned. . .

Bucky, do you stand to receive a brokerage commission on the sale of that painting if you locate a Japanese buyer? If so, shouldn't you disclose that on this board so that whoever helps you locate the buyer can share in that commission? Just a thought....
