Fucked Reasons for coming to Japan

I'd like to hear other FG's reasons for coming to Japan in the 1st place. These were mine-

I'm the classic economic refugee gaijin whose finances were going to hell in a handbasket. Dspite Australia being cheap in some ways, it aint good to live in Sydney when you've got no finances behind you.

I have tightarse parents who never helped me out with a cracker. All thru school I couldnt get any financial assistance from my parents while mates whose parents fit a certain income level got whats called Austudy (a weekly payment from the govt) which they spent on their social lives.

I worked for any scraps of finances at some truly shit jobs. When I started uni my old man said that I could now leave home - thanx dad, again no financial assistance from the govt and the same old scrappy jobs but more of them because I had to pay rent etc.

I wonder if other FGs from the US, UK, Canada had similar experiences including having mates from Greek and Italian backgrounds whose parents actually told their kids not to go anywhere.

They told their kids to stay at home as paying rent would suck up their finances and they'd never own their own property. These friends of mine even at this stage of their lives have financial security. Their parents encouraged them to stay, didnt want their kids to pay board to them so the kids could become property owners.

My tightarse folks are Anglo and Irish backgrounds and have a chip on their shoulder about the fact that their kids should do everything themselves. Yet the ethnics help their kids achieve security early on and don't resent them for it.

Anyway, after paying rent in Sydney throughout uni and paying for all my own stuff like texts etc with no assistance from any source exept stringing together all these jobs I was broke. Dead broke. Couldn't get a job. Japan offered me the way out of it all.

Thats why tho this country drives me crazy at times it's a hellova lot better than being on the scrapheap in Australia facing no security and being decades behind other people I know. Thanx Japan! How about others?

You complain now, but being self-sufficient early on in life will be much better for your future. Look what you're doing now! Traveling to foreign places and making a living at it. How many can say that?

I was pissed at my parents for a lot of years too, and what a waste of time that was. You're better off not using too much of your energy being pissed off about how your parents raised you and more about what you're going to do once you have to leave Japan. You're gonna need a good exit strategy. I also recommend repairing your relationship with your folks if you can. In the end, all you really have is your family.

I wouldnt have left my own country. Japan gives me a solid income and female companionship as the icing on the cake.

The point about the exit strategy is good - but I wouldnt trust my old man and old dear for anything in the future. They'll probably make sure they move into the most expensive retirement village they can and lock up the money that way and then leave whats left to the Catholic Church.

But let's hear - why did other FGs come to Japan?:)

I have heard this sob story before. I read about a ship full of Chinese illegal immigrants that went aground off California, they all had a similar story about why they wanted to go to the Golden Mountain. They were all deported.

I decided to leave my home country at age 20. Not because I was kicked out but I wanted freeedom from my very strict family. From there, I have to pay everything by myself from food to every single toothpaste and toilet roll and at the same time, giving my parents allowance every month. I still pratise giving them allowance even now, it is my commitment. It is not easy especially when one is still young or salary were low, but there were lots of people out there doing the same thing as me. You may want to think positive that you have a capable parents that don't need your finacial help in life.

Going to a country illegally is a diffrent story, I definately don't agree with entering/staying a country illegally, but I know many illegal Chinese immigrants also consist of parents who leave behind their children, hoping to work and send back money for theiir kids. it must had been a hard decisions for them too.

Anyway, to answer the thread- I ended up in Japan now is because I got married .

Unable to find a circus, at age 16 I ran away to sea. Actually, it was more like sneaking away to sea, but I don't tell my kids that. After too many years ploughing the oceans I swallowed the anchor and ended up on the beach here in Japan.
So no real reason, fucked or otherwise.

I must admit that I do sometimes miss shipboard life, but I've made a few adjustments to shore life............I sleep on the shelf in the oshire. I've replaced the oshire door with a curtain and six hours after I go to sleep,I have the wife whip open the curtain, shine a flashlight in my eyes, and mumble "Sorry, wrong bunk".
I put lube oil in my humidifier instead of water and set it to "High".
Every time there's a thunderstorm, I go sit in a wobbly rocking chair and rock as hard as I can until I'm nauseous.
Apart from having to make these few little adjustments, I think I'm coping quite well.

Now into year 13 and enjoying life tremendously. I wouldn't say that I'll never leave but at the current time I certainly have no plans to.

I was teaching LD children, and my position was cut thanks to educational funding cuts in Canada. A lot of my friends were unemployed at the time, and Japan offered my a refuge. I thought, come for a year, make some money and head back. Well here I am 14 years later, and no plans to move back. Although I have heard the economy in Canada did pick up.

been here 8 years now (consecutively), first came over 11 years ago. started studying japanese on my own in high school many moons ago.

met my wife while flunking engineering for the second time. visited here for a few weeks, went back, finished flunking engineering and came on a whv after that. got hitched in canada, worked in web development for a year or so, quit and we came here without much of a second thought. had not even looked back until recently. just lately i'd been considering the notion of going back but i've all but decided not to.

I was majoring in physics in college and planned to continue on to grad school and research afterwards, but around the second year I hit a brick wall with the math and ended up switching my major to history. I managed to get my degree in four years, but now I had no idea what I was going to do after that. Then a roommate who'd spent a summer studying in Japan said "there are plenty of jobs in Japan teaching English. You'd have no problem finding work there."

I spent a year after graduation saving up money working part-time jobs and taking Japanese lessons in night school, then came over here and started teaching in Shizuoka. That was 12 years ago.

It sounds like you have a very large chip on your shoulder. Take it from a person who came from a very similar background as you; it's OK to recognize the things that were lacking in your childhood, but it will serve you much better to recognize the advantages you had over much of the third-world and even over many people from modern countries who were subjected to physical abuse, etc. There is always somebody who is in a worse situation than you are, so instead of dwelling on what you didn't have, appreciate what you did have and what you've achieved because of it.

I know it's hard to do, and I slip up quite often, but I'm telling you, if you don't make the effort the angst will just gnaw away at you from the inside. I remember when I first started law school (which is a post-graduate degree in the U.S.) I was really self-conscious because it seemed like every one of my cohorts came from professional families and had parents who were doctor's or lawyers, and they were simply groomed to achieve success from an early age. I resented my parents for being high school drop-outs and for not mentoring me in anything remotely involving education, I resented my classmates for being able to go to school without worrying about the crippling amount of debt that I was accumulating. But then, I reminded myself, I have no money, I came from a shitty family, I was a high-school burn out (finished on my own with a GED), yet I'm still able to put myself through law school. What a great fucking country I live in. Sure, I have to take out loans, sure it took me longer to get here than other people who had supportive families, but every decision was my own, every choice I made was done free from the pressures of family, and everything that I've earned is to my own credit. That is a good feeling, and it will give you an edge over your peers if you use it correctly.

So anyway, I think you should applaud yourself for getting up and finding employment wherever you could in order to survive, instead of sitting home and collecting allowance from your parents as many young adults seem to do now days. I'd wager you lead a much more interesting life than them. I would also suggest forgiving your parents. It really helps you move on in life. Parents are products of their own environment, and often times they simply don't know any better. It's best to just forgive them, salvage what ever relationship you do have with them, and then vow to break the cycle.

Rooboy, I didn't exactly have the best most supportive upbringing either, but I try not to dwell on it. My youngest brother is pretty much the same. While my other brother and sister are still really angry at our parents. And you know what? My youngest brother and I are a lot happier and doing a lot more with our lives now while the other two just want to sit around and blame [insert "the man" of the day here].

Shit, your parent wouldn't pay for school? My father's worth several million dollars US and wouldn't even help me pay for health insurance or needed physical therapy a few year ago when I was out of work, out of savings, busting my ass looking for a job, and ineligible for government assistance. Then he kicked me out of the house because I was too old to be living at home for free. I was literally $700 away from homelessness. At the same time he spent several thousand dollars on vet bills for a dog that later had to put to sleep.

But you know what? That experience and the following couple of years of being lost and stuck in a dead end job I took out of desperation toughened me up and made me realize I can make it in pretty much any situation. It also gave me the hunger and drive to do something with myself and right now I'm happier than I've been in years.

Get over it, rooboy. Life is too short to worry about how shit your past was. Especially if things are going OK now.

I wasn't kidding when I said YBF. I had no choice to come but to come to Japan. I was in the military and they said you can go to Japan, or go directly to Jail with out passing go and without collecting 200 dollars!

When I arrived I found I enjoyed the country, the lack of Christian morality that made a girl-a-night club membership highly appealing and available to even the meekest of us because of the extreme lack on the part of the local short stem Chrysanthemums and so I decided to stay (and have never looked back).

Unfortunately, now it's gone to an obachan every week or two club, except during bonus season (when the size of my wallet becomes more important than the length of my johnson to the Roppongiettes), or I get extremely lucky and bag a drunk at closing time.

You're taking my comments about my old man and old dear too seriously - even though the comments are true.

My folks are tightarses who want their kids to get jack along with the fact that my BA from Sydney Uni was worth half a turd when it came to trying to get work in my home city. Thats why Japan rocks for me and while I know theres a lot of gaijin who get pissed off here, I never let myself cause Japan's been good to me!

I have a reasonably good relationship with my old man - I've gone home for a break when the rugby league season's on and we've watched our team the Roosters. Likewise my old dear - gone out to lunch with her when I go back home (of course I paid!) but I'm just happy to be making a living in Japan and not struggling in Sydney.

As I said, I'm a gaijin who'll admit they're in Japan because their life in their home country was fucked!

So - just what is it that brings out your insecurity so much (this is addressed to the last few posters)?:confused: I'm enjoying working and living in Japan in jobs that are fulfilling for me.

I couldnt get that in Australia - no Charles, I think my own country has probably the best lifestyle on earth, it's the opposite of fucked with the great food, space, personal freedom enjoyed, lack of guns etc.

It's just that my BA degree didnt get me anywhere in my home city. The fact you feel the need to make it an issue against Australia tells me something about your own life. As for the rest who posted below Charles, geez some major issues there too!

I love my English teaching gigs. I regularly get students telling my bosses I'm their favourite teacher. I've always done my work properly. As I said - Japan gives me steady employment I enjoy and that aspect of my life was fucked back home in Sydney.

I do my best to get along w/ Japanese people tho I dont think like them and don't want to act like them w/ their many, many cares and worries about what people think, and which language to use, and failure to be able to strike up friendships in a casual yet lasting way.

Taka whatsyourname - if you're for real and Japanese and not just pretending, I have the last laugh over you. You're stuck with all those things but I can move in Japanese society with the benefits of being a gaijin.

Maybe you bitter posters need to get fulfilled in your working life as well?
