The Small World of FG

Postby mr. sparkle » Sat Jun 02, 2007 1:14 am

Hey Dudes,
Yesterday I was rappin' with a fellow editor on a break here in LA. We were talking about Tokyo, BKK and stuff. I bring up my experiences, told him about my buddy with the video camera and he goes, "Oh! You mean Rob Pongi?".

Turns out the guy is FG Tetsujin Gaijin. Cool guy, btw. And stories that will blow your mind.

So have any of you happened upon random FGs? Any other LA FGs please get in touch.

I think I'm about to in about a month or so. ;)

But what's up with "BKK"? Is "Bangkok" a naughty word or something?

That's wild. I had a similiar recent experience too Sparkle-san. Yesterday I was working at the post facility in LA and I start rappin with this guy about Japan and BKK. As we are exchanging war stories I find out that this guy knows Rob Pongi and that he is - wait, that was you!!! Great meeting you too, and you have only heard the tip of the iceberg in terms of wild stories ;)

In regards to the question what's up with BKK - No, Bangkok is not a forbiddin word. It is just easier to type BKK (that's the airport code) than Bangkok. Over there you end up text messaging a lot so people use BKK as shorhand. No one actually says BKK in conversation though, because it is faster to say Bangkok. Ironically, the name Bangkok itself is a shorhand of sorts. The real Thai name for the city is Krung Thep Maha Nakhon.

Was back in LA last month...managed to avoid going to any place that was remotely "Japanese-esque".

Iraira,

Yeah, there are a lot of Japanese-esque places in LA. Since I live here, I go to those areas sometimes to get my Japan-fix. But, like watching a porno, it's ultimately unsatifying because you are not not really getting any. It's one big tease. Yet, like a junkie, I still go. Go figure.

Aw, you just don't know where to go. Next time I'm in LA (soon I hope) I'll take the both of you to my favorite izakaya, you'll think you're in Tokyo. But if you really want the true Japan experience in LA, I'll take you to the sushiya where we'll be turned away at the door because we're not Japanese.

What about Little Tokyo? Strolling around there is pretty J-esque. And in my hood, there are tons of sushi and shabu shabu joints along Ventura Blvd. in Studio City.

What I wanna know is where are all the J-Babes here?

Don't get me wrong. I know where a LOT of the great Japanese places are in LA. I was at an izakaya tonight in fact. :) What I mean is, that when I go to these places (and LA has got a lot of great Japanese restaurants , etc.) I get my Japan fix, but also makes me want to go to Japan! So that is where the frustration comes in.

Charles, I'll take you up on the sushi-ya in LA that will turn you away if you are not Japanese. Which one is it?

Yeah, next time I'm in town, I really need to try that place. Maybe, if you flash a photo of Debito, they'll let you in?

I don't know the name, I couldn't read the cursive kanji on the sign. It may not even be there anymore, it's been a while since I tried to get in. But we'll try again and see what happens.

It was downtown, just outside Little Tokyo. Do you know where the old restaurant "Cocola" used to be about 20 years ago? It was on that same block. I think it was off Alameda, maybe 4th or 5th Street. I looked on Google Maps but couldn't find it in the sat images, but it was in walking distance of my old loft. I was a regular at Cocola, so I could probably walk there in my sleep.
I heard the place is a really pricey "prix fixee" sushiya so it was probably all for the best that I was denied entrance. If we manage to get in, you're buying. ha..

They may be a little young, but you could always try Santa Monica College. I swear, the place must have at least 50% Japanese enrollment. There are also many exchange students from China, Korea and other Asian countries to fulfill your YBF requirements.
