Why are the Aussies so uptight about the Japanese eating a limited number of whales?
You don`t see crap like Aussies disecting Kangaroos and alligators/Crocs, whatever they`re called, over here.

I support opposing to overfishing whales.
But why can fucking Aussies blame eating itself or butcher itself of whales?
This is racism pretending environmental protection.
I wholeheartedly want to severely abuse all of fuckin Aussies living in Japan.

Kangaroos and Crocodiles (there are no wild alligators in Australia) are abundant and even so abundant in some areas that they are considered a pest. They are in no danger of dying out. I'll assume you were just ignorant about that fact, as their situation can't seriously be compared with that of whales.

To understand marine resource issues, perhaps a better example is wild blue fin tuna. Although scientists can estimate how many can be taken each year and still leave enough to keep stocks healthy (let alone let them survive) and although countries can agree on how many each country can take (from what is a shared resource), Japan's fishing industry has simply ignored all that and greedily over-fished this resource to the point where wild fish stocks are quickly disappearing. Basically, their short-term greed is fast killing what should have been a long-term resource for many countries.

In a TV piece I saw only about a week or so again, even a Japanese government department official admitted that they were severely embarrassed at how badly their measures had failed to prevent their fishing industry simply ignoring their quotas.

The difference with whales is that tuna are also farmed, in huge pens.

Although some sushi chefs insist that the wild fish taste better, they are happily buying the farmed tuna as the wild ones become more scarce and expensive.

So the two issues with whales that spring to my mind are these:

(a) They can't be farmed and aren't replaced nearly as quickly as fish, so a whale species is much more at risk of being wiped out completely by over-fishing; and
(b) If there's a allowable excess at any one time, why should one country be allowed to take it all.

I`m afraid I wasn`t ignorant of that fact, I just refuse to give a flying F..K. Like those menfolk before us who killed off the Mammoth and other such greats. I see a lot of cultures who don`t eat whale meat beating on a culture that does. Why doesn`t the illegal trade in African Ivory get as much cover?
Perhaps it`s because we live here that we see so much of this, or that we become accustomed to it?
I don`t dispute your argument, I just don`t place as much importance on it as you. That does not make me ignorant.
Having said that, there are many things that I do and say that do make me ignorant. I`m sure the same goes for all of us.

Ever eaten whale?

Actually, it did in this case, but you've explained why - because you didn't care enough to find out anything about it.

I have nothing against ignorance itself. Thomas Gray wrote "ignorance is bliss" and there's some things I now regret knowing. But when it comes to using your knowledge, Harry Callahan probably said it best: "A man's got to know his limitations".

I sincerely hope that if you read my previous post again, you will no longer just look at your TV and see "a lot of cultures who don't eat whale meat beating on a culture that does". There are much bigger issues at stake, not the least of which is how to deal with rogue nations when it comes to international co-operation over shared resources, whether it's tuna and whales today or oil and gas tomorrow.
