A 13-year-old Thai girl living in Japan with her grandmother filed a lawsuit Tuesday, seeking the repeal of an immigration bureau decision to deny her permanent residency status....
The grandmother adopted the girl in 1997, in accordance with Thai law. Her husband also adopted her after she came to Japan.
The immigration bureau explained that she is too old to get permanent residency status as an adopted child. According to conditions set by the Justice Ministry, children in this bracket must be younger than 6 when adoption takes place.
Yoshida, a student at a junior high school in Tokyo's Arakawa Ward, said she can read and write Japanese. "I don't want to go back to Thailand. I have no house to live in and no one who can take care of me there,"

Local government officials submitted a petition with about 6,000 signatures to the immigration authorities Monday, demanding that permanent resident status be granted to a Thai girl living with her grandmother in Tokyo, campaign organizers said.
"Japan is a law-governed state, but I want (the immigration authorities) to put a priority on the happiness of that girl," said Sukehiro Kawasaki, principal of the Arakawa Ward Ogu-Hachiman Junior High School, where the girl is enrolled.

So she is free to stay in Japan? I mean do they not have a heart.. that girl could one day grow up to pay the crappy ass pension system that these boneheads rely on...

I mean she's adopted, enrolled in school, speaks Japanese, has "assimilated" somewhat to this society, has the support of her school, principal and the board of education as well as 6000 or so members of society, and could otherwise contribute to the well-being of Japan and they want to send her "home" where she has no living parent, no support system, etc....

That is just heartless... I say in cases like these, your heart should rule before any technicality... if not, you are not human.

I too would like to hear any updates of which any FG might be aware.

Generally speaking, I'm not sure Japanese Residency is really such a hot thing. Sure, I'm glad I can live here with my wife (I'd rather live somewhere else with her, but SHIKATA GA NAI

), but if I were a young person from a fast-growing East Asian, SE Asian, or Slavic country, I'd definitely think twice about checking in to the big "silver center" that is Japan.
