Bread that now comes in cans
International Herald-Asahi, 06/06/2006
In a sense, it's the next best thing to sliced bread: Bread that comes in a can and stays fresh for up to three years, that is.
The innovative product, intended for use as emergency rations, is the brainchild of a vocational center in Nagoya. The bread is baked by physically disabled residents of the Nagoya Light House Kowa dormitory.
Six bakers work in a small factory that was completed in early April in Nagoya's Koei district. The canned bread is called Pan Desuyo! (This Is Bread!). After the baked dough is placed into a can, the container is sealed....more....

No offence but I don't think that canned bread is my idea of emergency rations. I live in an area that gets cut off a few times a year due to weather adn bread is somethng I don't miss..

What a fab idea, and it seems also a good organization.

I actually ate some of this stuff several months ago (normal kind, not the otaku brand).

It was canned strawberry bread or something. My wife (the woman who eats natto, uni and inago) refused to try it.

It had a vague alcoholic smell when opened (from the strawberries I guess) and was kind moist/greasy. Edible, but definately not something I'd rush out to buy again except maybe to foist upon relatives back home as some cheapo omiyage which will entertain me more than them :)

That image wouldn't work for me but the http://www.mreinfo.com site is hilarious!!

Perhaps you could grab the image and upload here to FG (see thread on posting images) so we can see it.

Oh and PS - welcome to FG. :bounce:

I'm fine with it, but I doubt most Japanese would be cool with canned rice.. ;)

I grew up a military brat (first male to reach adulthood and not serve in the military for 4 generations, which is pretty impressive when you take into account the sheer size of my family) so am more than familiar with a wide variety or MREs and on base chow halls and there is some fairly disgusting stuff in there.

Some of it wasn't bad though. The drink powders were usually good when I was a kid :D
