Hunting Season

Hunting (whoever) season would seem to be in full swing given two separate stories.

From the Mainichi Daily News:

Man shoots hiker he mistakes for wild boar

A Kanagawa Prefecture man shot a hiker in a suburban Tokyo forest over the weekend after he mistakenly thought he was a wild boar, police said.

The 57-year-old man from Hiratsuka is being questioned over the incident that occurred while he was hunting in the Okutama area of outer Tokyo.

And an unrelated story from the Japan Today:

Hunter accidentally shoots himself, 10-year-old son in Nagano

NAGANO — A hunter accidentally shot himself and his 10-year-old son on Sunday in Nagano, police said Monday. The two were sent to hospital but their injuries are not life-threatening, they said.

Not being a hunter, I wouldn't know but shouldn't a hunter actually know what (s)he is aiming at before (s)he pulls the trigger?
Right, Cheney-kun?

This one sounds a little fishy to me. How do you accidentally shoot yourself AND your 10-year-old son while hunting?

Who said he didn't know where he was aiming? This is Cheney we're speaking about here...

It's only handguns that are illegal. Shotguns and rifles all though heavily licensed have always been legal, at least since the end of the war and Japan's return to independence.

You rarely hear of any gun-related crimes here. I thought the only things available remotely close to guns were these kinds.

Lots of riffles out in the country. Hunting deer is more common than most city dwellers would think.
