just... wow..

watched the whole video.. my (canadian) french isn't what it used to be but i could still get about 80% of what they were saying.. the line that struck me most was "a generation that refuses to grow up".

as for "hot", the only chick i found hot in that whole video is melissa theuriau. she is smokin.

I couldn't hear any Canadian French. They had Parisian accent.

Interesting video.

I was in Paris last week and went on that street called Ste. Anne where all the Japanese restaurants are. I ate Japanese food almost everyday.

The newscaster is red hot, like many women in France.

Yes french women are hot. and yes it's in Paris not canada.
That news show though is really shittty and everything they say should be taken with a grain of salt.
There are a lot of anime geeks in France but i never saw a girl dressed in the full goth lolita outfit on the street of Paris before. So either they told her to keep the outfit on all the time, or she's part of the hardcore branch of anime worship that didn't exist while i was living there.

I studied japanese in Paris for a year and it was full of those guys. My "senpai" was actually a 4th year anime geek, he helped me a lot with my kanji studies.
The guy actually translated a full rpg game in french and sent the translation to a game publishing company in his first year.
He came in japan at the same time as i did and did his master in a university in Nagoya. He lasted a year here, he was going batshit insane, he fucked a girl got her pregnant bring her back to paris to get her an abortion (they couldn't do it in japan for whatever reason) and swore to never set foot in the land of the rising sun ever again.
Amazingly enough he still lives with that girl who now is in Paris studying at a cooking school and he's still studying japanese. He wants to become a japanese teacher at the same university we both studied in.
Basically he still loves anime, manga and videogame, he loves the langage even more but he can't stand the country.
Another girl from the same college, a 3rd year went on to become a Nova teacher. She loved anime as well. She ended up coming back to France after 2 years in Osaka. One of her student started masturbating during one of her class. It was probably instrumental in her leaving amongst all the other shit she had to deal with, being a teacher at Nova.

My point is, those guys really idealize Japan, and they really believe it's going to be different than the shitty place they're from (we all come from a shittty place).
One of the saddest part of the piece is when the goth loli ask an onigiri at a stand and the guy tell her that there aren't any left. She seems really disapointed, like if she missed on something really important.
I hope she'll never live here, she will get crushed.

As for "a generation that refuses to grow up", those guys are not a "generation", they're the geek minority. So the correct phrasing would be "a minority of geeks that refuses to grow up". It doesn't sound as good when reading it, so now they're a "generation".
That's what i was talking about. That show is the kind of tv that makes you believe it's the news while in fact it's just another form of entertainment.
And yes, the fact that a tanned model is reading the prompter is not innocent as well.

Yeah, sorry, I misread James. I guess he is Canadian which is why he put Canada in parentheses and I got the impression that I should be expecting French-Canadian accent in the program.

That's a pretty crazy story, I figured living in Japan has to be like a constant orgasm for otaku. What exactly made him leave and swear to never go back again?

With loads of horny geek-boy virgins flying one way and bucketloads of willing no-pill-taking J-chicks flying the other I figure there must be billions of these stories on the net. :nihonjin:

The only part that surprised me was the bit about the abortion... I thought Japan was supposed to be the easiest country in the world to get one? Did her family get in the way or what?

I think there was a lot of different reasons. Mainly it was about the general feeling he got when he was interacting with japanese people.
I think he put a lot of hope in this trip, and kept being disapointed. One of his
biggest frustration was to realize he had a lot more of interest and knowledge in japanese culture than most japanese people did.
The thing is, he went to japan to learn more about the culture as a whole, and he found out that the general japanese culture and langage was more seriously studied in his university back in Paris than at the place he was in Nagoya.
I don't feel japan is to blame for this, it's actually very natural to treat your own history and culture wih less formality and respect than someone with an external point of view.

For example, people studying american litterature in France place Fauklner pretty high up on the american culture ladder. American people for the most haven't read a single book by him because he's considered boring.

It's like what they say about Mount Fuji being a nice mountain to look at but a shitty mountain to climb.
I don't know if you climbed Mount Fuji but that's exactly it. Once you get to the top, there are portable toilets, vending machines and garbage everywhere.
It's like the whole journey you made to get there was completely meaningless.

So it's not Japan's fault, but rather the fact that he had very high expectations about Japan.

Question for those of you who would know;

How inviting is French society to foreign trends like the Japanese goth/lolita craze? I can't understand a lick of French, unfortunately, but was this news broadcast presenting it in a good light?

I'm just curious because I remember hearing how protective France is of their culture, for example, radio stations are required to have around 40% of their music come from French artists, etc. I'm just wondering if little French girls dressing like little Japanese girls is frowned upon there.

It's pretty funny- French girls dressing like Japanese girls who are modeling themselves after French girls (think "Marie Antoinette", gothic lolita style").

I'd say the French show was fairly critical with gothic lotitas following scarification but at least they let the girls speak for themselves about their motivations.

Tokyo, not Japan is the hub for fashion. I came across many people in the fashion and design industry during my many travels and everyone told me that Tokyo is where fashion happens. One fashionista in Montreal told me that her office subscribed to all decoration and fashion magazines from Japan to keep an eye on what's hot.

Gawd, the laugh track on that video is obnoxious. Their contrived Japanese "accents" remind me of the old Charlie Chan movies from the 1930's.

All power to you Greg, you have a good singing voice. Having said that, this video could almost have been created for a board called Fucked Gaijin. I like the fact that another video is called "Singing Kimono Greg Irwin".

Ooh, missed this one before. Greg is a very nice guy, but he is definitely fucked. Those videos showed him singing "doyo", or traditional Japanese children's songs. Much of his recent work has been translating these to English and singing them in both languages for a few years. He definitely reached a higher level of fuckitude when he started that project.
