For the second year running, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will open up the pedestrian promenade on Rainbow Bridge over New Year. During the winter months, the bridge usually closes at 6:00pm but it will remain open on December 31st through until 6:00pm on New Year's Day enabling New Year's revellers to watch the sunrise and throw up into Tokyo Bay from a height of over 50 metres. No bicycles allowed.

Or jump to their deaths into the chilly waters of Tokyo Bay.

Walking the length of the bridge is a great afternoon trek in Tokyo. Going from one end to the next takes about 30 minutes.

As for jumping, it can be done. But there is quite a bit of fencing up along the path.

Notably, this is 10 minutes faster than driving across it.

How do you get onto the bridge as a pedestrian? What is the closest station? I am assuming the walking entrance is different to the car one!!

We are all thinking of doing this tonight...

Trains running all night again?

From Odaiba, just walk along the beach/park until you get to the front of the bridge. You will see the entry gate.

From the center of the city, JR Tamachi station is the closest useful station (the Yurikamome has a station, Shibaura Futo, that is a drag to use from Shimbashi but it will get you in the vicinity of the entrance easier). This side is a little trickier for access. But again, just walk in the direction of the bridge and there should be enough signage to guide you once you cross the Shuto Expressway. If you look at image below the entry is at the knot in the loop that bridge makes.

Walking over rainbow bridge at sunset is one of my favorite things to do in Tokyo...And you can switch from one the north side of the bridge to the south side of the bridge via one of the two cross under paths that go underneath the bridge (I didn't notice these paths the first time I walked across). I'm trying to remember if there were toilet facilities in an interior room near the middle of the bridge, but there are some on the Tokyo side entry point...I don't believe there were any on the Odaiba side entry point but I'm not 100% positive about that, worst comes to worse, you may need to hike all the way to the "beach"/park area past some of the Odaiba apartment blocks. Needless to say, I don't think I would want to be on the deck of boat going under Rainbow Bridge this evening.

On a possibly related note, does anybody know what's inside these fancy-looking, modern, shiny glass rooms underneath the bridge? I've always imagined it was something like Governor Blinky's private dining room overlooking the bay. There's one on each side of the bridge (pictured here is the one on the Odaiba side).

It's a museum. There are some very nice displays that go through the bridge construction process. The last time I went through though it was closed.
